You can't talk about how wonderful this album is without discussing the production. For this set, Abbey Lincoln does tunes that, for the most part, exist on a very narrow tipping point between good and schmaltzy. The arrangements are spartan and seem to exist in a deep background, as if Abbey is singing on a stage and the band is playing from behind the curtain. This approach is far preferable to, say, syrupy strings and an overwhelming piano because it brings the drama of all the tunes to a focal point: Abbey's voice. This absolutely transforms the tunes. "Lonely House," which might otherwise be self-pitying, comes off strong and declarative. "Come Sunday" is plaintive without any sense of giving up. And Lincoln has the musical intelligence to put her voice behind the narrative power of songs like "Brother, Where are You?" and "Lost in the Stars" instead of dominating them. While this isn't as adventurous an album as the one that follows, that is no bad thing here. Lincoln allows these songs to live simply as songs, and so the album exists as a rare and wonderful gift to the larger jazz cannon

Abbey Lincoln's third of three Riverside albums directly precedes her more adventurous work with drummer (and then-husband) Max Roach. With fine backup from trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Wynton Kelly, Les Spann (doubling on guitar and flute), bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Philly Joe Jones) on seven of the ten numbers, and by Roach's regular quintet at the time on the other three selections, Lincoln is quite emotional and distinctive during a particularly strong set. Highlights include the first vocal version ever of "Afro-Blue," "Come Sunday," Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Brother, Where Are You," "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," "Long as You're Living," and Lincoln's own "Let Up." A very memorable set.

Abbey Lincoln is in peak form on this set of standards (and one original). Her vocals are breathtaking and the lyrics have a depth that emerges with repeat listens. This album is definitely a precursor to the civil rights oriented music that would follow in the sixties. Highly recommended, especially for nighttime listening. ·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has a visible wrinkle (bubble in paper slick) in the cardboard base on the back panel

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (just a beginning of the split seam)
