A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI -- Krishna Consciousness -- hard to find, original 1966 U.S. album. For Acid and Psych fans, this is an ex. rare private press LP of superb, hypnotic and other-worldly chanting by the founder of the Hare Krishna movement and a major figure in late 1960's and 1970's counter-culture, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (Prabhupada). The back cover features a quote from hippie/beatnik guru Allen Ginsberg, and apparently The Beatles themselves heard a copy of this LP inspiring George Harrison to meet w/ Bhaktivedanta when he visited London (Harrison would go on to produce an album by a U.K. branch of the Krishna movement for Apple Records.) The story behind this album, which is the first-ever Hare Krishna related record, is fascinating: rock and spoken word producer Alan Kallman (who'd released Timothy Leary's "L.S.D." album on his Pixie label as well as LP's by Malcolm X and others) saw Bhaktivedanta chanting in a New York City park; he later approached him about recording an LP w/ his young group of devotees. According to accounts by some of the backing singers, the group chanted their way through Times Square (!!) on their way to the recording studio, where they cut this album essentially in one take. Side One, "Hare Krishna Mantra Chant" is a mindblowing, hypnotic chant by the Swami and his followers playing bells, sticks, a two-headed Indian drum and a harmonium loaned to them by Allen Ginsberg (!), truly music to storm the Gates of Heaven. Side Two features a spoken word segment by the Swami explaining the meaning of the mantra chants, followed by another superb musical number "Chant to the Mercy of the Spiritual Master." The LP was distributed to members of the Hare Krishna movement who then sold it to the general public; the initial run sold out quickly and it was apparently never re-released, making it extremely hard to come by.
