IKE QUEBEC * Soul Samba * Die auf dieser LP vorherrschende, schwüle, molltonale Stimmung mit brasilianischem Akzent scheint von Ike Quebec, der unter Krebs in fortgeschrittenem Stadium litt und daran drei Monat später verstarb, beeinflusst zu sein. Sein großartiger und leidenschaftlicher Ton auf dem Tenorsaxophon ist jedoch völlig unversehrt. Quebec's Beitrag zum Ausbruch der Bossanova-Welle in jenem Jahr (1962) ist muskulöser als der von Stan Getz und basiert nicht auf den bekannten Songs von Jobim und Gilberto jener Tage. Die subtilen und raffinierten Rhythmen von Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo und Garvin Masseaux sind eine exzellente Basis für die Solos von Ike Quebec und Kenny Burrell. This program of sultry, minor key music with a Brazilian tinge seems inspired by Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here is big-toned, impassioned tenor is intact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that explored that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo on the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.
