Very SCARCE original first pressing Dutch album from AFTER TEA, circa 1968, a superb mix of freakbeat, beat pop and toytown popsike from these Dutch masters. File alongside KOOBAS, SPENCER DAVIS GROUP, SMALL FACES, WORLD OF OZ and all your Rubble faves, which you can see reflected in song titles like "Not Just A Flower In Your Hair", "In The Land of the Bubble Gum Tree" and "Gotta Get You In My Garden, Girl", which prove they were either really into the whole Lewis Carroll English countryside thing, or they were simply excellent horticulturists.  Unlike many continental bands in the late 60's, there really ain't a single duff track here, and maybe that's because they (thankfully) eschew the bad Motown and soul covers that most bands felt obliged to add to their albums. All tracks here are band originals. And they're all great.

After Tea, from The Hague, were formed when keyboardist Hans van Eijck left the Tee-Set. He was joined by Ray Fenwick and Polle Eduard. After Tea’s trademark was a late 60s flower power popsike sound. Just after the band’s debut album "National Disaster" was released van Eijck returned to the Tee-Set and Ray Fenwick returned to England to join the Spencer Davis group, replacing Steve Winwood. He was replaced by Ferry Lever. Drummer Martin Hahe left the band and was replaced by Pierre van der Linden (later drummer of Focus) and later on by Ilja Gort.  

Based on the success of their debut 45, Decca management wasted no time rushing the group into the studio to record this album. Produced by Bert Schouten, 1968's "National Disaster" offered up an entertaining blend of mid-1960s freakbeat, pop, psych, and rock influences. Largely written by van Eijck and Fenwick the song titles pretty much told you what was going on.  If tracks like the earlier single 'Not Just a Flower In Your Hair', 'In the Land of the Bubble Gum Tree' and 'The Time Is Nigh' weren't a reflection of the age of love, peace and lots of illicit substances, I don't know what was! Hearing a lyric like 'throw away your LSD' (off 'The Time Is Nigh') has to make you laugh. Equally good were the band's occasional stabs at blue-eyed soul ('National Disaster'), and more conventional rock ('Long Ago').  Hard to believe, but in spite of van  Eijck's heavily accented vocals, the combination of trippy studio effects (phasing, offbeat tempos, etc.) and some strong material made for an album that stood up well against better know UK and US competitors.   

Opening up with some slashing fuzz guitar from Fenwick and van Eijck's stabbing organ chords, 'Gotta Get You in My Garden Girl' was definitely a mid-1960s timepiece, but what a great slice of flower-power/psychedelia.  Anyone who thought the genre only belonged to American and English bands need only listen to this one to see the error in their ways. One of the album highlights. A precursor to future musical directions, 'Long Ago' featured a much heavier organ and guitar-propelled sound. Unlike much of the collection that sported a very '1967' sound and feel, this performance was the closest they came to a hard rock performance, the results being very impressive. Complete with manic, treated vocals and children's chorus (love the dorky '"la, la, la, la"), this one sounded like something The Small Faces might have done in the midst of a week long acid trip. The time capsule lyrics were hysterical ("take your LSD and throw it away, because meditation is the thing for today"). Wonderful stuff indeed!

Fabulous original 1960's psych / popsike album by this legendary Dutch group. This is a great collectors copy for all psych and beat collectors that have not yet got this record!

MINT (M): The record / cd displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade
