HERE'S a record that is sure to disappoint! It's JIMMY BRACKEN'S TOE TICKLERS, doing the jazz classic "AFTER YOU'VE GONE." Feast your eyes on this Who's Who of Hot personnel:
JIMMY McPARTLAND (cornet), JACK TEAGARDEN (trombone), JIMMY DORSEY (clarinet, alto sax), BUD FREEMAN and PEE WEE RUSSELL (clarinet, tenor sax), VIC BREIDIS (piano), DICK MORGAN (banjo), HARRY GOODMAN (tuba) RAY BAUDUC (drums).
And the record is clean as a whistle!
So what's not to like? A world-beating, great hot jazz record of a classic tune, right? Not so fast! This was one of those sessions where the band was under strict instructions to play as corny and stilted as possible! And the A & R man kept close watch to make sure those instructions were carried out to the letter! So, on this side at least, the jazz talents of the above named were cruelly wasted! Ah, well...
The other side, "WHY DID YOU?" by THE ROUNDERS, a straight-up dance band, is peppy as hell, threatening hotness at every point, but similarly, it deprives us listeners of actual jazz content.
Anyhow! Aside from that!! This original 1929 Domino 4381 is in gleaming EE+ condition, and comes in its original Domino sleeve. Probably from an unsold dealer's stock.
