Description
For sale is a very rare 1971 private pressing of Agápe - Gospel Hard Rock (as it says on the spine). I’ve also seen it just called Agápe (self-titled) as the labels suggest. This is a very early example of Christian Hard Rock with some great psychedelic fuzz, feedback and effects. Read description below.

Sleeve: VG+
Beautiful crisp sleeve has no creases or splits and is still snug in its original shrink wrap. Perfectly legible spine. There is some yellowing left over from some ancient tape on the shrink wrap that I have peeled off. The yellowing is mostly all on the shrink wrap, not the sleeve.
Only the “circle” in the middle of the 1 inch tape marks on front and back are small holes in the shrink and the yellowing is on the sleeve itself from the tape- again, only for those circle areas. I’ve tried to show in the last three photos. Otherwise I’d grade the sleeve NM- The yellow area along the opening edge on the back is most definitely only on the shrink wrap and the sleeve underneath is quite white. See pics!
Disc: VG+
Beautiful glossy disc would grade VG++ to NM- due to a few wispy superficial nothings that appear/disappear under bright light but there is one light superficial scuff on side two that does not affect play. The rest is a beauty and overall it is easily a nice VG+. Some faint crackles here and there between songs is all I could detect when cranked up loud. The audio quality is quite nice on this with some loud thumping bass and detailed highs…well recorded and cut!

“Agape was a hippie-era psychedelic hard rock act that used the music of youth rebellion to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Fred Caban was a young guitarist from Azusa, CA, who became a born-again Christian shortly after graduating from high school in 1968. In an effort to help evangelize his peers, Caban formed the band with bassist John Peckhart and drummer Mike Jungkman. They were one of the earliest Christian rock bands, established in a time when the music they played was still being shunned by established churches (the few they approached for concerts rejected the loud music they played, despite the message). Agape performed wherever they could, on beaches, in schools, and in parks, and released their debut album (Gospel Hard Rock) in 1971. Their sound was typical of the era, blues-based hard rock in the tradition of Cream, though the group's garage band level abilities lent the music a raw, clumsy appeal that nicely matched their lyrical sincerity.”
My own personal take is that the song Rejoice reminds me of The End by The Doors a little bit…the whole album is a real joy to listen to!

Shipping: $6 via USPS Media Mail. Disc has been ultrasonically cleaned and will be placed behind the jacket in a plastic outer sleeve, sandwiched between cardboard stiffeners and shipped in a proper LP mailer.
