Marc Lebel
" Un De Plus "
Les Edition RM (Escales) ES-37111, 1971 (private pressing, Canada)
Cover (shrink wrap) ....NM (no cut-outs)
Vinyl ...NM- (light superficial scuff, light surface noise) Labels....NM
“ In 1972 French Canadian (Quebec) band Agape (not the Californian Christian Psych-Rock band of the same name from the late 60’s) released “Le Troisieme Seuil” (“English transl., “The Third Doorway”) on a private label (Editions RM). ....Obscure stuff indeed….best described as folk-psych-prog-xian rock with doomy church organ and spacey sound effects……now very rare and highly coveted !
The previous year, just before they christened themselves “Agape”, founding members Marc Lebel (guitars, vocals), Gilles Bergeron (guitars, bass) and René Dupéré (keyboards & musical direction) issued this even more obscure local private pressing, “Un De Plus” (English transl., “One More”) .....with it’s crude hand-drawn cover design (by Lise Lamontagne). Although credited and released under Marc Lebel’s name, make no mistake…this is nothing less than underground pre-Agape madness by founding members Lebel, Bergeron & Dupéré.
*** René Dupéré, went on, of course, to produce the brilliant soundtracks of the famed Cirque Du Soleil ***
Like the cover design, the music is also crude….but anything but simple ! Way out there…..from folk, to progressive jazz, to fuzz freakout guitar blasts, …very bohemian and raw atmosphere…..recorded with a savage garage vibe. Not slick at all, yet with an eclectic melange of instruments and arrangements….acoustic & electric guitars, fuzz guitar, trumpet, French horn, mandolin, harmonica, drums and percussion.
Guess these cats were hippie underground head dudes….a definite druggie sounding weird LP. Apparently sold in the hundreds (not "thousands"), and now near impossible to track down.
Value of this obscurity has been climbing rapidly in the last few years
