DEV012 Ahab - The Call of the wretched Sea DLP (black vinyl + poster) LIMITED TO 500 COPIES - SOLD OUT AND LONG OUT OF PRINT! Documenting the classic Melville novel (such as Mastodon roughly did with Leviathan) in a most haunting way, The Call of the Wretched Sea is a downward spiraling abyss of gloom. From the initial evocative aura that begins “Below the Sun” you truly feel enveloped as if underwater, drowning in a sea of murk. “The Pacific,” as with the rest of the record, follows surging along, heavy and slow, with vocals featuring a mostly bellowed death lurch and spoken word interstitials. Eerie melodies wind in and out of every track, creating a soft current below the maelstrom of chords and voice. Occasional clean breaks soften the ever falling descent into the chasm and depression that Ahab sinks you into. Only one of the seven full tracks featured dip below the ten minute mark and never does one of them break into anything faster than a crawl. The Call of the Wretched Sea is certainly a breath of very needed fresh air in a genre of forlorn loves and Cthulhu ramblings culminating in an extremely dense amalgam of enraged drone and bawling doom.
