Description
HERE'S a fine record, beat but scarce, by Blues singer LILLIE DELK CHRISTIAN. But this time, she's not singing the blues. Instead, she sings two of the biggest popular hit standards in existence at that moment (May, 1927): "AIN'T SHE SWEET" and "IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOU." In 2021, both of these songs are still being performed!
In 1927, Christian was a rare black cross-over artist, like Ethel Waters, who seemed effortlessly to sail from black blues to white pop tunes and back with ease and no raised eyebrows.
On this Chicago record, her accompanists are RICHARD M. JONES' JAZZ WIZARDS: ARTIE STARKS (clarinet) JOHNNY ST. CYR (banjo and reportedly Miss Christian's boyfriend); and RICHARD M. JONES (piano).
This original 1927 "Electric" "Race" OKeh 8475 is in somewhat beat V- condition. It has taken considerable abuse. It also, apparently, was dropped on its edge sometime in its long career, causing about ten turns worth of damage on "Sweet," no turns on "Depend." Yet, it plays on. Amazing it exists today!
(n.b.: The stenciled permanent yellow-ink number 1174 branded in the dead wax was put there by the legendary DON BROWN, who ran the Jazz Man Record Shop in Hollywood and Santa Monica for thirty years (1954-84). I bought many a 78, including this one, in that Cathedral of Shellac during my formative years.)
