The first volume of Al Green's Greatest Hits is a winning collection of his early 1970s hits.  The album is not chronological but it doesn't have to be for the listener to chart Green's success.  He and producer Willie Mitchell hit on a successful formula of suave soul that netted them six Top 10 singles.  Nearly every song on this collection features a bed of strings on which rested a horn section, percolating keyboards, smooth guitar lines, and gutbucket drums courtesy of Stax/Volt veteran Al Jackson.  Hell, Green even takes something as wimpy the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" (the only non-single in this collection) and, by adding a church organ and female backing vocals, manages to elevate it into a soulful ballad.

The song titles chart a course directly to a lover's heart.  Green is "Tired of Being Alone," so "Call Me (Come Back Home)" and "Let's Stay Together" because "I'm Still in Love with You."  Green even offers the ultimate in commitment, "Let's Get Married."  Whatever his personal life was at the time, the persona he created on record wasn't the love-'em-and-leave-'em type, but one who was invested for the long haul.

You can hear it in the earliest of these grooves.  He goes through a set of vocal gymnastics on "Tired of Being Alone," from a blues shout to a low growl to a squealing plea.  He pulls off a similar set of moves on his cover of the Temptations' "I Can't Get Next to You" while his band transforms the funk into a robotic, almost hypnotic beat.  By the time of "Call Me (Come Back Home)," Green effortlessly navigates the highs and lows of a relationship, giving his lover enough space to venture out, look around, and, if she so chooses, to return. "It's all in a day's work," Green croons, though I expect she'd come back just for the tasty guitar lick that Teeny Hodges lays down.

Most people are familiar with "Let's Stay Together" and "I'm Still in Love With You," so it's good to report that the less well-worn hits like "You Ought to Be With Me" and "Look What You Done for Me" sound all the fresher for it.  The melodies are irresistible and Green deftly uses his falsetto to get his point across.

The CD version of this album carries the same cover of a bare-chested Green but adds six songs from Greatest Hits, Volume 2 and jettisons "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart."  However, it is worth it to seek out the original LP edition because it contains a bonus not included on CD--an extended version of "Let's Stay Together."

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 3-5 mm long ) on one of its seams.

-       Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel ( apparently  a minor manufacturing flaw)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
