It’s hard to imagine for some folks just how big of a star Al Jolson was. Just try combining Elton John AND Elvis Presley and take them back to the 1920s, and you’re getting pretty close. Jolson just had the right thing, at the right time, that bridged the southern minstrel tradition with the jazz world. He was a transitional artist at a time when musicologtists hadn’t even coined the term.
This was yet another big hit single when “Liza” hit the top ten in September of 1929. It was from the production “Show Girl.” On the flip is “One Sweet Kiss.”
