When it comes to the roots of power pop and alternative music, you can’t go very far without finding Big Star and Alex Chilton. REM, The Replacements and Wilco are only a very few of the bands that count Big Star and Alex Chilton as primary inspirations. Recorded about five years apart, Alex Chilton’s Free Again: The “1970” Sessions contain his first solo recordings as he was leaving The Box Tops and point the way stylistically towards the territory soon to be explored Big Star, while Third closes the chapter on the band that gave The Bangles “September Gurls,” Elliott Smith “Thirteen” and That 70’s Show theme song “In The Street,” along with legions of fans that discover Big Star like a secret among friends, growing year after year.
