This album, which sounds as if the author has no earthly concerns whatsoever and is completely immersed in his own inner space, originally sold a meager dozen-or-so hundred copies, and was promptly deleted from Columbia catalogue as utterly lacking commercial potential. Needless to say, it has gained a massive cult status since, and is now considered one of the finest works of the psychedelic - or any - era. Words can't quite describe the celestial beauty of this work. If you have never hear this album, drop all your Drakes, Buckleys, Barrets, Fred Neils and Dino Valentes and go for this one.

All I can see is this: Buy this NOW, or cry  your heart out LATER. Chances are that another copy of this beautiful album, in this condition, will not be up for sale any time soon. Yes, CD reissue was nice, but you have not heard this beautiful Psych classic unless and until you’ve heard it in its original form (mix).

IMPORTANT NOTE: We had a long and occasionally contentious correspondence with Bob Irwin, the owner and Chief Operating Officer of Sundazed records regarding Sundazed’s 1999 reissue of this album. We felt strongly that the Sundazed release – as fine-sounding as it is (certainly infinitely better than Columbia’s godawful 1989 CD) – does not reflect the original sound and ‘feel’ of  the 1968 analogue LP, and that it is too sharp and too heavy on treble to match the elusive sweetness and warm, almost mystical, melancholy of the original 1968 pressing. Our initial impression was that Sundazed digitally remixed, enhanced or re-equalized production tapes without properly disclosing the remix, something that Bob Irwin vehemently denied and continues to deny, insisting that Sundazed used only the very first generation Columbia master tape for their release (a position we hereby duly and formally acknowledge). Ultimately, we could not bridge the gap in our opinions, since our ears have a mind and opinion of their own,  but we did agree on one thing: that it IS possible that original Columbia engineers may, in fact, have deliberately shorn-off (truncated) the high frequency range of the original 1968 mix, either in effort to make the sound sweeter and fuzzier, or to accommodate the technical limitations of the period equipment, or for some artistic effect. Either way, in our view, the 1968 recording sounds distinctly different from the Sundazed reissue. In the interest of full disclosure, we have BOTH versions of the album in our personal collection and have nothing but praise for Sundazed and its line of great products.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (minor, but visible, scuff on one track (“Weighed Down”) has absolutely NO effect on playing and is only a minor visual nuisance.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-        Back cover has a single, razor-like line (cut) in one corner, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intact and no part is missing, but the razor line is visible.

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side).

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the spine and the top seam (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
