ALEXIS KORNER’S BLUES INCORPORATED ‘R & B from the MARQUEE’ is a 1962 UK Mono album on Decca Ace Of Clubs, ACL 1130. The musicians are: Alexis Korner, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Cyril Davies** & this LP was produced by Jack Good.
The tracks are as follows: Side One: GOTTA MOVE, RAIN IS SUCH A LONESOME SOUND, I GOT MY BRAND ON YOU, SPOOKY BUT NICE, KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF, I WANNA PUT A TIGER IN YOUR TANK. Side Two: I GOT MY MOJO WORKING, FINKLE’S CAFÉ, HOOCHIE COOOCHIE, DOWN TOWN, HOW LONG, HOW LONG, BLUES, I THOUGHT I HEARD THAT TRAIN WHISTLE BLOW.
**’This L. P. was recorded shortly after Blues Inc. opened at the Marquee, and for the purpose of this recording session, Alexis Korner added to his normal front line drummer Graham Burbidge who for several years has been the mainstay of Chris Barber’s rhythm section, and gained first hand experience of the idiom sitting in at Smitty’s Corner in Chicago with Muddy Waters during a recent American tour. Another addition is Spike Heatley on bass, until recently a veteran of the Johnny Dankworth big band. On piano is Keith Scott, while the hard, booting tenor playing comes from Dick Heckstall-Smith – one of the most exciting and competent saxophonists on the scene today. Alexis Korner leads the group on guitar, and the wild, keening sound of the harmonica is provided by Cyril Davies. The well-known British blues singer Long John Baldry joins the group to sing three of the titles on this record – the remainder of the vocal honours going to Cyril Davies’.
For those who haven’t yet come across this LP: rest assured it’s a stunning classic that more than stands the test of time.
The Vinyl is VG+ and plays very clean – there are no skips or jumps. The Cover is VG due to a very light stain on the front Ace of Clubs symbol, (this appears to be under the laminate). The reverse of the cover has light staining due to age and a small tear approx ¼” long at the opening edge about one third of the way down.
