This is the rare occasion of an Alice Coltrane trio album, and it provides a more intimate look at her music than most of the other albums from this period, many of which sounded like the John Coltrane band without Coltrane.

On side A, Alice Coltrane does an exercise in abstract impressionism, weaving ethereal sound tapestries on her harp while Ron Carter works his bass like a water pump. The semantic link to New Age music is definitely there, but Coltrane's music is simply too abstract and angular to please anyone who would expect anything melodic.

On side B, she does an exercise in abstract expressionism, this time on the piano, and it seems almost as if she's pointing out the way that piano solos would take on 20-30 years later. This is perfectly up to date music, with only a slight hint of late 60s hippiedom, but firmly rooted and full of expressive emotion.

In fact, this album borders so much on modern classical music that it may surprise first-time listeners, who, I guess, expected something very different from John Coltrane's wife. This is unlike most of her other albums, and it probably hasn't been properly reissued on CD for this very reason, but it's by no means an album that can be neglected.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (SIDE 1 IS IN A SLIGHTLY BETTER CONDITION THAN SIDE 2 AND DESERVES TO BE GRADED 'EXC')

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a small peel-off mark ON THE INSIDE GATEFOLD (less than 2 square inch in size)
