This might be the best debut album ever delivered by an American blues band, a bold, powerful, hard-edged, soulful essay in electric blues with a native Southern ambience. Some lingering elements of the psychedelic era then drawing to a close can be found in "Dreams," along with the template for the group's on-stage workouts with "Whipping Post," and a solid cover of Muddy Waters' "Trouble No More." There isn't a bad song here, and only the fact that the group did even better the next time out keeps this from getting the highest possible rating.

Allman Brothers Band - and Duane Allman, in particular, remain objects of our uncritical veneration and admiration. They were, in our humble opinion, the only WHITE (notwithstanding J.J. Johansson, who was black) blues performers who could really play - and feel - the blues. (The others being Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield, John Hammond, jr., John Mayall, and Graham Bond -- did we miss someone? -- oh, yes: Fred Neil and John Sebastian).  THIS ORIGINAL PRESSING OF THEIR FIRST ALBUM STILL OFFERS THE FINEST SOUND SOURCE AROUND. If Duane Allman does not blow your speakers right off, the Oakley-Trucks-Johansson rhythm section definitely will!!!

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 1 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (less than 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
