Whereas most great live rock albums are about energy, At Fillmore East is like a great live jazz session, where the pleasure comes from the musicians' interaction and playing. The great thing about that is, the original album that brought the Allmans so much acclaim is as notable for its clever studio editing as it is for its performances. Producer Tom Dowd skillfully trimmed some of the performances down to relatively concise running time (edits later restored on the double-disc set The Fillmore Concerts), at times condensing several performances into one track. Far from being a sacrilege, this tactic helps present the Allmans in their best light, since even if the music isn't necessarily concise (three tracks run over ten minutes, with two in the 20-minute range), it does showcase the group's terrific instrumental interplay, letting each member (but particularly guitarist Duane and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg) shine. Even after the release of the unedited concerts, this original double album remains the pinnacle of the Allmans and Southern rock at its most elastic, bluesy, and jazzy.

If you think you have heard every possible version of this album (and I think there is about 10-15 different editions out there on the market),think again! THIS ORIGINAL PRESSING IS STILL THE FINEST SOUND SOURCE AROUND. If Duane Allman does not blow your speakers right off, the Oakley-Trucks-Johansson rhythm section most definitely will!!!. The clarity and quality of this recording is nothing short of mindboggling. You will have a feeling that you were there in Fillmore East, on that legendary night in 1971.

(a)          WE GRADE SIDES 1 & 4 (RECORD # 2) AS DECENT, VERY GOOD (VG) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in clean, playable condition. There are a few surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches  (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters) and a few others that might cause short periods of pops and clicks, specially during the low, quiet passages.

(b)          WE GRADE SIDES 2 & 3 (RECORD #1) AS AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters) 110-I

(c)           The records have George Piros’ initials (GP) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax), which signify highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 200:1.

(e)             The records come in poly-lined inner sleeves, which have - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The gatefold cover has partially split seams on all four of its "legs" (1, 2, 3 and 3 inches)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams (top, bottom, spine)

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged

-         Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on both sides (nothing significant)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
