Cat Number: 2402036. This album so late in the ‘Plum’ format run, this very unusually includes both the original catalogue number and the new Kinney number actually printed on the spine (please see my close-up picture of this detail). This could almost be unique, it seems the company could not even decide which to choose. Also includes the new Kinney Records sticker on the back of the much rarer UK Atlantic cover.

Label/Format: Original Atlantic red and maroon (‘Plum’) format. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Four fantastic labels: very clean, fresh and highly attractive, practically definitive examples that without any doubt, have been little handled or played. One to two light, very small and faint spindle marks on each and a classic original double set hardly even run-in by vinyl standards.

Country of Manufacture: England: that’s both records, inners and cover. This set is more often seen within a US-made cover that were used in most cases. British made covers with the Atlantic numbers are far rarer and seldom see, especially with so little wear. These final Atlantic UK stickered covers with both the old AND new catalogue numbers were made in tiny numbers and not seen at all often.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of these Records: 121 / 120 grams. Around average for their era.

Rarity: Quite possibly the rarest UK plum rock album there is, especially so as a complete UK copy with the MacNeill printed cover, original date-coded inners (September 1971, as seen in close up) and two beautiful ‘Plum’ label records that offer superb sound. One of the very last albums pressed on the this collectable format and almost certainly in very small numbers (compared to many) and a non-charting album too, complete UK copies have always been elusive and try finding this in much better condition. This album was pressed on the fringe of the label design format change in 1971 and it never charted in the UK but sold quite well in the US. This may explain more fully why many UK pressings are found in the US cover - it was manufactured in greater numbers and exported here to save costs on an album that was never likely to sell big here. So late indeed was it, this MacNeill cover includes BOTH the 2402036 AND the K 60011 numbers on the spine, was this unique to have old and new catalogue numbers actually printed on to a cover? For good measure, Atlantic included the Kinney sticker on the back as well as by time this cover was made, the transfer had been already made. The relative failure of this album in the UK has to be a real surprise, take into consideration this has to be arguably one of the very best live albums of all time, if not THE best. A massive guitar-fest of the highest possible quailty. This somewhat ‘lost’ plum vinyl classic is more loved and desirable than ever before and justifiably so. The cover on this album is incredibly hard to find in decent conditions but this one is lovely with barely any noteworthy wear and the records are both fantastic. For good measure the inners confirm it’s time of issue. Four lovely Plum labels and the best sound achieveable. One of the classics and being there must have been awe-inspiring – this is probably as close as it ever gets these days.

Original Year of Release: Issued in July 1971, right on the fringe of the transition period to the new Kinney labels. Although the cover has both original and Kinney references, the records have only original matrixes as seen below.

Matrix Nos: 2402035 A // 1 1 2 3 & 2402036 B // 1 1 1 3 & 2402036 A // 1 1 1 4 & 2402036 B // 3 1 1 4. (Record 2 is error corrected A and B’s transposed). Sometimes this set is found with the incorrect label placed on the records, ‘Whippin’ Post’ often switched but this copy has the correct labels on the correct sides which I feel is always better.

Musicians: Duane Allman – lead guitar, slide guitar; Gregg Allman – organ, piano, vocals; Dickey Betts – lead guitar, vocals; Berry Oakley – bass guitar; Jai Johanny Johanson – drums, congas, timbales; Butch Trucks – drums, tympani.

Album Information: The band’s third album and this must have raised a few eyebrows for the few who bought it back in the early 70s. Without doubt one of the greatest live documents of the rock era. This supreme double set captures one of the tightest bands ever, featuring their original line-up before Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were cruelly lost. Beautiful melodic lengthy workouts with blistering dual guitars and drummers and of course featuring Duane’s superb blues vocals. This is a guitar tour de force and listening to this again just makes you wonder where all the guitar heroes have gone these days. Fillmore did not chart in the UK but sold well in the US peaking at 13. UK copies are never easily found as originals and this copy on offer is on the highly collectable original Atlantic ‘Plum’ format. Whatever cover version holds a Plum copy – American or British, it was never laminated and being predominately black will usually be found heavily worn. For the majority of collectors, the most cherished is the MacNeill UK-made version, they are rarer and are possibly unique in printing both the old and new catalogue numbers on the spine. This fairly flimsy cover is in strong condition with minimal traces of wear and the records appear very little played. Both sounding magnificent, it’s a copy that will thrill collectors, play this loud and enjoy one of the most breathtaking live albums ever put to record – this is as close to like being there you will ever experience these days.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: thin card, matt-finished dark gatefolds, few survive ring wear free and often this is deeply penetrating. Any traces on this one are minuscule.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical on one that rarely wears well. An unlaminated gatefold format with a matt, smooth finish. Printed in England by MacNeill. Includes original Kinney sticker on the back and unusually, has both old and new catalogue numbers printed on the spine (seen in close-up picture).

Cover Front: Clean and still fresh and attractive. A little corner tip rubbing and a couple of very fine surface creases that show little. One quite gentle press mark only shows under angled light. The lack of rubbing, sticker marks and ring wear are major pluses, any rim impression very faint indeed.

Cover Back: Almost the same but even better, a very gentle faint surface crease near the bottom left corner area, it hardly shows with normal viewing. The Atlantic sticker promoting the new Kinney number is almost pristine and without doubt, has never been removed. So few of these will be seen devoid of ring wear, but none here and given all the facts, both front and back are impressive.

Cover Gatefold Inner: The inside has barely any real wear at all and little to fault.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are very light indeed, just a rub to the back right corner area that few escape entirely. Both remain straight.

Bottom Edges: Light rubbing that registers little on the already pale design, again the right corners have rubbed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are clean and sharp with minimal traces of any wear, any thickening or burring tiny and minimal, a tiny nick on the back outer edge (but look very hard). The two records are stored via these two vulnerable edges and are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and folded square with minimal compression, a slight tilt to left with the edges meeting up quite closely together and parallel. The overall lack of wear to this spine is almost remarkable, few avoid it. A little rubbing to the very ends and both folds have very little to fault. There may appear a little rubbing on the top one, but it’s the mortar in the brick artwork, not wear. ALL the text is fully present and totally unworn, that is a massive bonus and rarely seen – this confirmed by my close-up pictures.

Corners: Moderate corner tip rubbing, double gatefolds always the most vulnerable for this. Quite fine shape retained. I would have graded this cover a little higher minus this.

Cover Summary: A rare one and still in very attractive overall condition, finding one much better will prove immensely difficult, most copies of this I have had over the past 10 years have been in US covers with the Capricorn details. How nice to offer this totally complete UK original in such fine condition, this cover should please many, and being so elusive, possibly most collectors. Although the corner tips have rubbed, this is not unduly evident by viewing the cover face-on.

The Inner Sleeves: Both NEAR EXCELLENT: both date-coded 9/71 (September 1971) from batch 39 and 40 and a near mirror-image pair of polylined inners. These very clear linings as seen through four undamaged crisp window circles. A little creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs and both still clean with few marks or ageing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and even this is being quite conservative. All four surfaces are very clean, shiny and solidly pressed. The indicators point to a barely handled or played set which is reitterated by superb sound quality. Any surface traces are tiny, very few and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. Finding this classic set much better will prove very difficult indeed and most collectors will treasure them.

Album Played For Grading: Yes [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent set plays even above it’s very impressive visual grading with practically nothing to fault. I feel confident enough to say all four sides play to nigh-on perfection with nothing unwanted. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear and no pops or clicks were noted. Beautifully pressed with no surface sounds, this set is a class act – as were the band themselves. This guitar festival is stunning, a phenominal recording, well produced too, not all early 70s live albums were; but this is a true exception. Play this as loud as you can and you could almost be at The Fillmore, this legendary venue and concert must have been awe inspiring. Both channels are clean and clear, all frequencies sharp which is vitally important for those loud electric guitars which go into overdrive and frenzy on many occasions – this is a blistering album that will send shivers down the spine. I feel certain this set has been hardly been played, two 42 year old records that are barely even ‘run-in’ in vinyl terms. Generally well stored and looked after and lightly handled. The one and only previous owner owned a quality separate stereo system so this and like all others in this collection that were purchased new, have never been exposed to damaging worn-out stylus and the difference is plain to see and hear. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this legendary double set, this is pure captivating brilliance of the highest order. This ‘Plum’ pair will prove near impossible to find better and the sound will delight even the most discerning audio purist. This legendary concert and set can be strongly recommended, how long before I find another quite like this?

End Piece: One of the definitive live albums ever, with perfect performances from this outstanding, original American band. Always highly regarded by critics and always featuring highly in any ‘Best Albums of all Time Lists’ and justifiably so. Side fours ‘Whippin Post’, clocking in at 22.40 has to be one of the most awesome tracks ever put to vinyl, it’s a groundbreaking tour de force and remains one of rock’s most inspired and definitive improvised performances, and there is not a second of filler material on this album. This band made two double classics: this stunning live double and the equally classic Eat a Peach, another double set. Two of the finest albums ever from their genre. With so genuinely few classic rock guitarists around these days bar the older original guys who survived, sit back and enjoy this guitar-feast of pure brilliance – Phew!! DO NOT LOSE THIS ONE.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
