UP FOR BIDS AS SHOWN: RARE AMERICAN RECORD CO. 10" SINGLE FACE RECORDING.
This is a very rare example of an 1904-1905 American Record Company recording. When we consulted The Almost Complete 78 RPM Record Guide (II), by Steven Barr, the first known number was 031165, cut in September 1905. Please note that our record, #030651, pre-dates the first known number by several months, or maybe even a year! This record measures 10 5/8 inches, and our test revealed that it plays best at about 75 RPM, instead of 78 RPM, possibly even slower. It plays great but has some background noise, due to play wear. Also, it has some light scratches but still has good play integrity, no chips, no graying, and has what appears to be some gloss. When looking at and playing the record, my first reaction was that this is a VG+ recording. However, we try to be as conservative as possible, so let's just call it VG (plays better than it looks). We played the record with a Stanton 2.75 elliptical truncated stylus and found it to play quite clean, with only a minimal amount of background noise, using no filters. (Note: The first several grooves have more background noise than the rest.) While testing, we used the same cartridge and a standard 2.0, 1.75, and 1.50 stylus. Our findings: the smaller the stylus, the louder the background noise. Another interesting thing that indicates the age: immediately preceding the song, an announcer briefly states, "Navajo, by the Regimental Band of the Republic, American Record Company".
