Label Conditions: All four are immaculate, and I do mean looking practically new: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen on all four. These are VERY revealing, and I cannot even see a single fingermark or handling trace on any of them – incredible, but true. Two scarce krautrock records that time has totally overlooked, this pair even better than my own personal copy.

Rarity: Scarce: one of the Krautrock classics bought by few at the time, but loved by those who did. This early UK copy is one of the very best I have seen or heard. Firstly the cover, this incredibly fragile and rarely seen devoid of heavy ring wear on both sides, this has barely any at all, so a very attractive example visually, but with a few issues described further down. Both records are truly stunning and could conceivably, prior to my mandatory play-grade, have been unplayed – both sound fantastic. Even the tan UA inners are impressive. A rare opportunity to own one of the greatest albums in the Krautrock genre and one of my personal favourites of this type. Indeed, if I did not already own a copy similiar to this, I would even be offering this one.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 1960s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument at all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound (Faust). A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered, especially in high grading conditions.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Yeti was the band’s second album, following the remarkable Phallus Dei after breaking away from the original Amon Duul band due to musical differences and direction. Amon Duul II made some of the most stunning progressive rock sounds from the early 1970s. More intricate songs and less ‘basic’ than the early raw sound of early acid-phase Hawkwind, and less spacy sounding, Amon Duul II included a female vocalist (Renate) who often sang deliberately off-key to enhance the mayhem. Crazed acid-soaked violin and guitar go head-to-head with long improvisations and the results are astonishing. Personally I love all their early works but Yeti for me is their most outstanding work. The importance of their music within the ‘Krautrock’ genre is so often understated when compared to other classic bands like Can, Faust, Neu, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. This album is heavy and I mean HEAVY and includes some of the most awesome power-riffs ever put to vinyl, play this album loud (and you can really let this copy go with real confidence) and it could rip the cloth of your speakers. The sheer gut-wrenching power embedded in these very clean, wear-free grooves cannot fail to impress and even audiophile connoisseurs will be left aghast hearing this on a high quality hi-fi system (this copy is well worthy), indeed both records look unplayed. Featuring also the classic ‘Reaper’ cover, this also in very fine condition, the lack of penetrating ring wear so unusual and hard to find, this really does look impressive. Even those who found Krautrock difficult will enjoy this powerful rock album, and a cleaner pair of very early pressed Liberty records are unlikely to ever be found.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold with textured surfaces on the outside and smooth inside. This made with very soft and delicate card and is immensely prone to all forms of wear. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. This classic double set includes the tan UA unlined inners.

Cover Front: Brilliant sleeve, one of my real favourites, this for me a real classic with an eerie presence and the front is one of the very best I have ever seen. The man wielding the scythe was Wolfgang Kriske, a non-band member who stayed with the group, the famous picture was shot by Falk Rogner, it was used to depict ‘Der Schnitter’ (The Harvester), who cuts down people’s lives’ said Rogner, ‘a very strong figure in German mythology’. It has become one of underground rock’s most famous iconic covers. Thin, soft card double album gatefolds rarely escape often heavy penetrating ring wear, this has minuscule traces with any rub traces on the very edges, and only very fine and light. Barely any creasing and no sticker issues, this truly classic rock artwork will rarely be found better.

Cover Back: The back overall is pretty much the same, except there is a vertical thumb-crease on the left opening edge. Three small splits to the very soft card: one a mere nick, one a fraction bigger, the third around 1 cm. These I have very carefully and neatly repaired to stop the risk of them widening, no now they appear as fine, neat surface creases, and few examples of this cover will avoid those as a bare minimum. So the back is not perfect, but it will still blow most away, the lack of rubbing and creasing elsewhere away from the left edge, are major pluses. Like the front, it retains deep colour with barely any hint of speckle to the fragile textured surface. In my 13 years of being an Ebay seller, I have rarely seen this famous cover with less overall wear, and that includes my own prized copy.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The eerie, equally classic ‘sea horse’ artwork is also superb. Hardly any wear at all and this looks fantastic as I hope my close-up pictures show.

Top Edges: Light to near moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: More moderate patchy rubbing, no splits or repairs to this soft, delicate card. These storage edges rarely escape some wear (at the very least), many I have seen have been literally threadbare.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, crisp and sharp, the front especially exceptional. As stated further up, three tiny to very small splits I have very neatly repaired on the outer back edge. Records often from new are very tight inside covers and removing them is often difficult. So soft card has little chance of not getting creased or damaged. Both neat overall with barely any thickening or burring, these are guaranteed untrimmed, the only ‘enhancement’ being the small, neat split repairs done by myself.

Spine and Text: A superb spine for such a fragile cover, this is very solid, straight with no compression or crushing. The white surface very slightly darkened but all text is pristine with no rubbing or letter clipping whatsoever. The lack or rubbing or damage to this ‘soft’ spine is almost remarkable, again this even betters my own copy.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs that are near impossible to avoid on a cover like this. Very fine to excellent shape retained with no rounding or erosion that is again rarely avoided.

Cover Summary: This has always been a difficult cover to find in even ‘decent’ condition, it is rarely seen anything like excellent. Edge rubbing is almost the least that can be expected, the lack of rubbing to main front, back, inside and spine is highly unusual and this will take some beating, even with the usual edge wear and small ‘repairs’ (and I do mean small). Not for the perfectionists, I hardly think many perfectionist-standard examples of this one will even still exist, but this hugely attractive example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: one a fraction better, the other a tad below – average EX. Both unlined tan UA inners are mainly clean with hardly any creasing, one small bottom edge split repaired by myself to stop the risk of widening in the future. Also one tiny seam flipback lift repair as well. Nice to include this first-issue pair of inners, often this set is seen missing them.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on top quality vinyl. All four labels are STUNNING as well. Any surface marks or blemishes are ultra fine and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light with NO audio affect whatsoever. I would go as far to say minuscule traces, even finer than hairlines and hardly any worthy of note, these records are exceptional. Few records of this age and genre will survive like this, most were bought by certain types of listeners and usually young, rarely hi-fi connoisseurs, and usually trashed. Both look hardly even played, if indeed at all prior to my usual sound-check and should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed, heavy sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds (but who would notice anyway)?, and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. If heavy guitar-rock with thunderous power riffs is your thing, few did it better than these German pioneers. Few copies will match or outperform this early British Liberty pressing significantly I feel certain. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these brilliant records – a title I look forward to hearing again on vinyl. The analogue format is perfect for this powerful, heavy rock music. This pair of records will prove close to impossible to find better and are unreservedly recommended. Certainly a contender for Krautrock’s greatest ever guitar-driven rock album. – do NOT lose this brilliant set.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
