AMON DUUL II - YETI (Liberty LSP 101) Double Album
Nothing has happened recently to make me alter my theory that the most inventive and creative European rock and roll is no longer coming wholly from Britain.
With a few honourable exceptions (King Crimson, sometimes Yes. and not the Soft Machine because their rock content is now nil) local bands are now being made to sound dull and drab by the Germans and the Danes in particular.
Amon Duul II are a case in point, and " Yeti," their second album released in this country, is just such an achievement. The first two sides consist of songs in the conventional sense, all fresh and alive and with the sense of discovery that most of our people have lost. To take two contrasting examples: "Archangels Thunderbird" (also released on a single) is a scary, apocalyptic, electric track with thundering fuzz bass and a great vocal by Renate, who sounds like a dismembered Nico. "Cerberus" is like a further-out Grateful Dead, starting with fast acoustic guitars, a phased passage merging them back into the electricity of the heavy, chiming guitars in "The Return Of Ruebezahl." Throughout these two sides they show a sense of form and balance one doesn't encounter here, particularly in the suite "Soap Shop Rock." Sides Three and Four are collective improvisation of a loose but controlled nature, bearing the same relationship to the Grateful Dead that H. G. Wells has to Isaac Asimov. Their total togetherness is demonstrated by the time-changes and interweaving lines of feedback which hold the sides together, and "Sandoz In The Rain," is a very pretty improvisation featuring flute, rather reminiscent of Burnin' Red Ivanhoe's "Canal Trip" in mood. Because of limitations of space, I feel, I haven't done this album, particularly the first two sides, justice. You should make a real effort to hear it. - Richard Williams
