Diese Einspielung bereitete mir enormen Genuss. Warum mir diese neue Ausgabe so gut gefallen hat, liegt vor allem daran, dass Kyung-Wha Chung und Radu Lupu überhaupt nicht so klingen wie zwei international bekannte Solisten, die nur für einen Nachmittag in einem Aufnahmestudio zusammengewürfelt wurden. Sie begeben sich nicht nur in die Hände des Anderen wie ein echtes, lang aufeinander abgestimmtes Duo, sondern schätzen auch die ganz besondere Intimität des Stils (ohne jede Andeutung gedämpfter Leidenschaft), die der Kammermusik innewohnt. In Francks Sonate scheint die Musik selbst das ideale Tempo für das Duo zu generieren, und auch in diesem Satz habe ich ihr zurückhaltenderes Rubato in der ersten Quasi-Lento-Episode bevorzugt, damit das Wiederaufleben einige Takte später (Tempo 1, Allegro) umso eindringlicher hervortreten kann. Die natürliche 'sprechende' Eloquenz der beiden Newcomer erscheint mir eher fränkisch. Ich denke auch, dass die größere Klarheit der Aufnahme der Musik zugute kommt; keines der beiden Instrumente wurde zu nah am Mikrofon platziert. (Bezüglich des Debussys) würde ich diese neue Einspielung der Sonate als diejenige vorschlagen, mit der man am besten leben kann, da sie die ganze mondsüchtige Fantasie und den melodischen Charme der Musik einfängt, ohne zu eitel nach beidem zu streben. I enjoyed this record enormously. Why I liked this new issue so much is primarily because Kyung-Wha Chung and Radu Lupu do not sound like two internationally famous soloists flung together in a recording studio just for an afternoon. They not only play into each other’s hands like a true, long-attuned duo, but also appreciate the very special intimacy of style (without any suggestion of muted ardour) inherent in chamber music. In Franck’s Sonata the music itself seems to generate the ideal tempo for them and in this movement I also preferred their more restrained rubato in the first quasi lento episode so that its resurgence a few bars later (Tempo 1, Allegro) can emerge the more emphatic. The natural ‘speaking’ eloquence of the newcomers seems to me more truly Franckian. I also think the greater clarity of their recording is all to the music’s good. Neither instrument sounds too close to the microphone. (Regarding the Debussy), I would suggest the new issue of this sonata as the easiest to live with, catching all the music’s moon-struck fantasy and wheedling melodic charm without self-conscious pursuit of either.
