Dieses "Best Of Sam Cooke"-Album wirkte wie ein Suchscheinwerfer, der die Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit auf Cooke's beliebteste Songs richtete. Für mehrere Generationen war dies das erste - und oft auch das einzige - Sam-Cooke-Album, das sie besaßen. Obwohl es ehrgeizigere Zusammenstellungen gibt, die Cookes außerordentliche Spannbreite und Vielfältigkeit zeigen, ist diese für den Anfang die beste. Es sind Sam Cookes größte finanzielle Erfolge, gewissermaßen die Flaschenpost, die seine Begabungen Millionen von Menschen zugänglich machte.
Was macht Sam Cookes Musik so unwiderstehlich? Vor allem anderen natürlich seine Stimme. Tatsächlich war Cooke ein derart guter Sänger, dass der Vizepräsident von Atlantic Records, Jerry Wexler, sachlich feststellte: »Sam Cooke war der beste Sänger, der je gelebt hat, da gibt es keine Konkurrenz«. Aber jenseits seiner wunderbaren Stimme ist es sein Stil, der diese Songs so zeitlos und unvergesslich macht. Cooke selbst hat es so erklärt: "Du musst einfach eine Geschichte erzählen. So kriegst du die Leute dazu, dir zu folgen - weil es nicht wie ein Song ist, sondern als ob zwei Menschen den gleichen Rhythmus schlagen, bloß dass eine Melodie hinzugefügt wird. Aber wenn du dann zum Refrain kommst (»That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang«), dann bist du frei, da singt jeder mit und du willst auch, dass jeder mitsingt." Und bis heute singt jeder mit.
Also kennen wir alle diese Songs. Und wir wissen alle, wie großartig sie sind. Aber bis jetzt wusste niemand - außer er war damals bei den Aufnahmen dabei - wie unglaublich gut diese Aufnahmen tatsächlich klingen. Jetzt, wo sie auf 45rpm geschnitten wurden, auf jedes Detail geachtet und an nichts gespart wurde, haben wir wirklich das Beste von "The Best Of Sam Cooke".
This "Best Of Sam Cooke" album was the beacon that kept Cooke's most popular songs in the public eye. For a couple of generations this was the first - and often only - Sam Cooke album they owned. Although there are more ambitious collections that show Cooke's remarkable range and diversity, this is still the best starting place. These are Sam Cooke's biggest commercial hits. This is the message in a bottle that brought his gifts to millions of people.
What is it that makes Cooke's music so irresistible? Well, first the voice, of course. So good, in fact, was Cooke as a vocalist that Atlantic Records vice president Jerry Wexler said matter-of-factly, »Sam Cooke was the best singer who ever lived, no contest«. But beyond just his voice, it's the phrasing that makes these songs so timeless and memorable. Cooke himself explained it this way: »You just talk the story. That's how you get people to come to you - because it's not like a song, it's like two people rapping, only with a melody attached. But then when you come to the hook ('That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang'), then you're free, everybody's gonna sing that part, you want to get everybody to sing along«. And they're still singing along.
So we all know the songs. We all know they're great. But nobody's known - not unless you were there when it was recorded - just how incredible these recordings actually sound. Now, cut at 45rpm with every detail tended to and no expense spared, we've got The Best of "The Best of Sam Cooke".
