AUTOUR D’UN RECIF

Jazz-ballet in two parts based on the images from the documentary of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, France 1949

“Autour d’un récif” is a short documentary dedicated to the life at sea and to his acquatic creatures, directed and produced by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1949. It is the first full arrangement credited to the talent of Andre’ Hodeir who will become an ideal musical partner for many French film directors from the early 50’s.  “Autour d’un récif”, deeply inspired to the Ellingtonian tradition, was originally conceived as a jazz-dance in two parts and the cream of French and American jazzmen resident in Paris were involved in this soundtrack.  The first part, describing the sport of underwater fishing on the Mediterranean coast, and the second with close-ups of seals swimming and lying in the sun on the North African coast, were well described with sensual and plastic descriptive jazz atmosphere.

SAINT-TROPEZ, DEVOIR DE VACANCES

Satirical film due to one of the principal French court-metragists of the 50’s. At the beginning of the fifties, Saint-Tropez attracts artists and Parisian celebrities as Juliette Gréco.

This documentary, to the signed text Boris Vian, is a testimony of the spirit of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in the 1950s. Paul Paviot and Boris Vian comment with irony on the summer impressions of a young Parisian and on the often worldly routine of the famous village. Among the celebrities in holiday resort:

Jacket :    VG+  

Slightly laminated soft cardboard cover, in VG+ condition, with just some paper creases along the spine,  corners with light wear and a little bump on left lower one. On the back cover flipbacks are in very good  condition with no tears and missing portions, with a little pen stroke on top left corner and a light general ring wear, considering the extreme softness of the cover. Overall a very smooth surface, with no cuts, no tears, no discoloration. Please, look at my cover scan.

Vinyl :   EX- 

Under a strong lamp the lustre vinyl is in EX- condition, with some minimal rubs  visible in transparency, but no marks or heavier wear; on “Saint-Tropez” side a light and narrow opalescent line can be detected, due to the contact with the original plastic inner sleeve, absolutely not affecting the music. The aural playing reveals the minimum of a very low background noise, also due to the vinyl pressing of the early 50s. Overall a very beautiful copy for a 10” pressing on Swing label and every serious collectors knows how those 10” SWING  are hard to find in nice conditions, often played with early turntables with heavy shells.

Catalogue/Label :

LP 10” SWING M.33.343 original 1st French, deep groove, MONO label. Labels are in excellent conditions with a few marks around the spindle hole on one side and a soft paper crease on the other side. Please look at my label scans.

GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light. 

        NM  (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I do not use "mint".

EX   (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly).

VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.

VG  Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.

VG-(Very Good Minus): A used or worn copy, that has not been taken good care of. Vinyl will have many scuffs or scratches, but play through enjoyably despite audible background noise. Covers will have tears, splits, writing, or other issues. 

 G  Fair, Poor: A very rough copy. Will play through without skipping unless otherwise noted, although records of this grade are sold AS-IS.
