Jail Bait collects ten of the early sides that Williams recorded for Fortune between 1956 and 1959. Backed by the Don Juans, Williams rips through his most famous songs, including "Jail Bait," a notorious tale of forbidden love and the often hilarious and definitively hip contrition of the protagonist pleading before the judge, all related with the smart syncopation that helped earned Williams the nickname "Mr.Rhythm." However, before the novelty R&B of "Jail Bait" and "Greasy Chicken" that earned Williams a consistent, if marginal, existence in the music world, he penned some fine R&B, including the mambo-rock of "Going Down to Tia Juana" as well as "It's All Over," "You Know I Can't Refuse," and "I Just Want a Little Love, Love, Lovin'." All of the songs here are essential, and while it's not quite complete -- "Bacon Fat" is a glaring omission -- it's a great look at a soul legend before the full-time hustle and permanent poker face was in place.
