Description

This is quite a rare original 1967 white label promo copy of Aretha's first album on Atlantic 8139 (Monarch pressing). The disc is quite scratchy in appearance but nothing deep. Mostly surface scratches and scuffing. But it plays better than it looks. There is background noise between songs and in quiet moments. The quieter songs have a good deal of audible noise, but on the louder tunes it is barely noticeable if at all. Plays through with no skips or catches and very few obtrusive pops. Actually there are even parts where there is no noise at all, and it is even perfectly quiet between songs. But mostly there is a little background noise, but usually only a little. As I say, you hear nothing during the upbeat numbers. The worst moments are on side two in the songs Do Right Woman, and A Change is Gonna Come, which are quieter ballads. There is some noticeable noise through these two songs especially, but they still play with no skips or anything like that, and are still clear and listenable. The rest of the record plays surprisingly well! I really enjoyed listening to the whole thing, and as I say, the more upbeat ones really don't have any issues. These early deep groove pressings are really resilient. Anyhow the cover is a strong VG+, I would say, with just a little shelfwear. No seam splits, dog ears, creases, rips, water damage, or anything like that. A really nice one, with a rare promo stamp on the back. Not a top copy but very enjoyable and so rare as a promo.
