About half of the songs on Runnin' Out of Fools were made famous by other singers. There's nothing all that unusual about that, some of Aretha's biggest hits were recordings of songs that had already been recorded by other artists. It wasn't unusual in the 50s and 60s to see multiple versions of the same song on the pop charts. It makes direct comparison easy, and for Aretha that's generally a good thing, because there aren't many (any?) pop singers that can keep up with her.

Aretha takes ownership of "Mockingbird" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". Mary Wells sang an incredible version of "My Guy" and the song will always be hers, but by adding a pinch of desire to the mix Aretha concocts a rendition that is all her own.

The only songs that Aretha fails to top or match the originals are "You'll Lose a Good Thing" and "Walk on By". Aretha's recording of "You'll Lose a Good Thing" is more soulful than Barbara Lynn's original version, and she can sing Lynn under the table, but Lynn's version is a much more well-crafted pop arrangement that gets to the heart of the song better than Aretha's. As far as "Walk on By" goes, well, the fact is that Burt Bacharach songs are tough to sing and they simply can't be powered through. Nobody could sing a Bacharach song as well as Dionne Warwick. Aretha does a decent job, and in fact handles the song better than most singers could have managed, but she lacks the sophistication to trump Dionne.

All in all, there's nothing spectacular about Runnin' Out of Fools. It's just a solid, well produced record that never stumbles and leaves you wanting more.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

-        The cover has a small (3") razor-like line (cut) on the back panel, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intact and no part is missing, but the razor line is visible.
