Co-produced by Aretha Franklin's long term "A" team of collaborators/producers  Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin, 1970's "This Girl's In Love with You" was another landmark release.   Chronologically the album offered up an interesting mixture of material Franklin had previously recorded in New York and newer tracks recorded at Miami's Criteria Studios with a host of Muscle Shoals sidemen, including guitarist Duane Allman.   Stepping away from the jazz moves of her prior studio release, the collection offered up a mixture of popular pop and soul covers; most given a distinctive Franklin reading.  With her marriage to Ted White collapsing and her personal life in tatters, it shouldn't have come as a surprise that much of the collection had kind of a dark and disturbed vibe ('It Ain't Fair', 'Dark End of the Street', and 'Sit Down and Cry'), but then, those are the kind of circumstances that have always made for some of Franklin's best work.   And for those in need of a bit of hope, there was always Aretha's own 'Call Me'.   With Franklin providing lots of the keyboards (along with Barry Beckett), this was a wonderful collection and well worth the investment.

Although it's covers-heavy, probably my second-favourite Aretha album after Lady Soul and somewhat underrated. "Son of a Preacher Man", "Share Your Love With Me", "Dark End of the Street", "Let It Be" (for me the best version of the song) and "It Ain't Fair" are all well up there among my favourite Aretha recordings and most of them have been mainstays on my MP3 player for some time. "It Ain't Fair" in particular deserves to be counted among the best lonely anthems ever put to an album and probably few would know it who weren't fans of Aretha. In the case of "Son of a Preacher Man", it was never something she'd screw up. I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but for wanting to hear a different version now and then it's great. I don't care much about "Eleanor Rigby" or "The Weight" but can't complain about their place on the album. Only songs I don't really like are "Call Me" and "Sit Down and Cry", the latter very much crossing that thin line into being way, way too over-the-top.

Perhaps nothing more than urban legend, but Paul McCartney supposedly wrote "Let it be" with Franklin in mind.  She was offered first rights the tune given a demo, and actually recorded it before The Beatles, but then decided to sit on the track, finally releasing it after The Beatles had scored a hit with it.  Regardless,  I'm always surprised by how much I like Franklin's Gospel-ed up version of the tune.  Perhaps it had something to do with her background, but her version is simply heart stirring (not to take anything away from the original).   Always loved the opening organ segment of the song.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

By many accounts, this album is Aretha's finest hour. Aretha is backed by the entire Muscle Shoals studio band headed by none other than Duane Allman of Allman Brothers Band. Soul does not get more soulful than this. Track listing: Son of a preacher man - Share your love with me - Dark end of the street - Let it be - Eleanor Rigby - This girl is in love with you - It ain't fair - The weight - Call me - Sit down and cry.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS AND IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
