Hailed as a vital new addition to the burgeoning progressive rock mise en scene, all eyes were initially on leader Rod Argent and his incredibly dexterous keyboard manipulations that guided the band through a complex, yet surprisingly accessible, potpourri of prime English prog. On this album, sandwiched between hugely elongated tracks like ‘The Coming Of Kohoutek’ are spicy adjuncts such as ‘God Gave Rock n’ Roll To You’, performed here with a gusto that eclipses the more familiar studio version, and ‘Hold Your Head Up’, again delivered with a penetrative enthusiasm, suggesting that Argent live wasn’t the daunting experience the uninitiated might have assumed.

 

'Encore' captures the band in a warm and determined mood, throwing everything plus the kitchen sink into their performance and producing a wonderful chemistry. It is interesting to note that this was the last record to feature Ballard as he left the band shortly after.

 

Highlights, and there are many, must include the solid hard rock of ‘Thunder And Lightning’, a tune whose funky guitar underpins the explosive refrain and dense, almost Deep Purplesque, keyboard support. ‘It’s Only Money’ occupies similar terrain but the biggest surprises arrive in the form of a, true-to-the-original, rendition of the massive Colin Blunstone (original lead vocalist of the Zombies) hit single ‘I Don’t Believe In Miracles’ (written by Ballard, produced by Rod Argent) and the evergreen Zombies’ signature song, ‘Time Of The Season’. The latter is a fascinating interpretation, heavy and proggy yet loyal to the original spirit, with immense keyboard support from Rod Argent.

 

The end result of all this is an enormously enjoyable record, featuring a classic British progressive rock band at the height of their creative power.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times

Vinyl: Beautiful I would say unplayed condition. No spindle marks and no other signs of any use. All four sides grade as shop fresh MINT!

Cover: Virtually no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully designed gate-fold cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is stiff, square and totally uncrushed. About the nicest copy I've ever seen. Ompossible to find like this after 46 year - grades as top shop fresh MINT!
