Argent

'In Deep'

Epic, UK, 1973

EPIC 65475

ALBUM NUMBER four from this extremely well respected British (Hertfordshire, based) progressive rock band fronted by keyboard wizard Rod Argent with guitarist/songwriter Russ Ballard providing an extra portion of magic. In fact, this was the last Argent album to feature Ballard before he split to go solo.

Earlier albums had been something of experimental affairs introducing them - post Zombies of course - to the new world of progressive rock whilst 'Altogether Now', the bands previous album, had produced a massive worldwide hit single 'Hold Your Head Up' helping them to break through from cult curiosities to major league players. 'In Deep' continues the vibe finding the band in confident mood rising to the challenges of success with the gravitas normally reserved for seasoned prog rock veterans. The music is bigger, brassier and jam packed with wonderful twists and turns - Ballard's songs stand bright and proud fully confirming his reputation as one of the world's greatest writers and indeed most successful; 'God Gave Rock And Roll To You' providing them with another major hit single.

Elsewhere the going is just as impressive with globs of creative prog rock coming at you from all sides. 'It's Only Money', is a long opus split into two parts but manages to be totally accessible and highly catchy. Likewise 'Be Glad' and 'Candles On The River', two highly forthright tracks but blessed with unique instrumental arrangements and some glorious keyboard work from Rod Argent himself.
