ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS – A Night In Tunisia ORIG Blue Note LP / BLP 4049 (US, Mono, 1960)
PLEASE SEE MY OTHER US BLUE NOTE LPs I CURRENTLY HAVE LISTED
Happy to present this early 4000 series original from Art and The Messengers featuring, along with Blakey, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. Fabulous RVG recording featuring the intense title track and the fantastic ‘So Tired’.
The single-format, front laminated, heavy card sleeve features the ’43 West 61st Street, New York 23, N.Y’ address to the lower rear. It’s a pleasing example with the following imperfections away from Mint: some laminate flaking along the top edge (only a thin line); 2 name stamps to the rear top; ‘1960’ written in pen to the same area; a mechanical copyright stamp stuck to the same area (see photo); some general age discolouration and storage rubs to the rear; slightly softened corners and an inch- long dent to the spine. Other than these there are NO creases to the front laminate, no splits, no rips or tears, no bends and no rippling or moisture damage. Not an excellent example but still pretty good, structurally sound and with a strong, clean front panel. Worthy of a VG+ (Very Good Plus) grade.
The deep groove labels have the ‘Blue Note Records Inc . 47 West 63rd . NYC’ address. Nice set with no writing or residue but with moderate spindle trails, mainly to Side 2 and some (very) light age spots around the Side 1 hole.
The medium weight vinyl has ‘RVG’ machine stamped to both sides and a ‘P’ (ear) inscription also. It shows some light marks to both sides – not many and not heavy but visible all the same. Side 1 shows some light, wispy scuff lines and some very faint hair lines while Side 2 has around 4 or 5 hair lines and a small patch of light scratches towards the end of this side. Visually, I’m conservatively grading at VG (Very Good) but please note THE WHOLE RECORD HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays very well indeed, EX (Excellent) play grade in fact. There are NO pops, no loud clicks, no distortion, groove wear or lack of definition. Expect a touch of surface static/light crackle in quiet areas (not many of these!) and some light repetitive ticks from ‘Yama’ into ‘Kozo’s Waltz’ on Side 2 (soon fades). Overall though, you’re listening to an excellent sounding record with superb sharp clarity and no major audio faults – a testament to the renowned RVG mastering.
Presented also in its original advertising inner (which has splits and small tears) – only in good condition but still there. I will provide a new inner for shipping.
