ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS – Indestructible ORIG Blue Note LP / BLP 4193 (US, Mono, 1966)

PLEASE SEE MY OTHER US BLUE NOTE LPs I CURRENTLY HAVE LISTED

Recorded in the April and May of 1964, this is surely one of Blakey’s great long players.  With Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton and Reginald Workman, Art whips up a storm on classics such as ‘The Egyptian’ and ‘Calling Miss Khadija’.  Great original copy here with an unbeatable sleeve.

The single format, stiff, thick, non-laminated US-style sleeve features the ’43 West 61st Street, New York 23’ address to the lower rear.  It’s still half in its original shrink – opened but in super shape with NO splits, edge wear, storage rubs, ring wear, creases, scrapes or corner dents.  No bends, rips, tears or ripples.  Lovely, flat and maintaining full colour and solid structure, it shows just a hint of handling evidence around the opening edges but will surely be difficult to better.  Grades a believable M- (Mint Minus) and is about as fresh as they come at this late stage in the day.

The labels have the ‘New York USA’ text, as issued.  There is no writing, stickers, residue or other damage but Side 2 has picked up some foxing spots (see photos) – not as visible as it looks in the pictures.  Also, just one similar mark to Side 1.  Not too much in the way of spindle evidence shows that this record is perhaps little played (that is borne out in the amazing sound quality, please read on…)

The vinyl has ‘VAN GELDER’ machine stamped into the run-offs of both sides but no ‘P’ or ‘ear’ etching (in keeping with a 1966 pressing, I believe).  It’s a lovely copy with no real marking of any significance, possibly only one light scuff between the 2 sides.  There is however, right at the end of Side 2 (almost on the run-out), a tiny pressing bobble which causes maybe a half dozen pops.  This excepted, there are NO scratches, hairlines, dust pockets, embedded dirt or nasty scrapes.  Maintains a lovely ‘near-to-new’ shine and to my eyes, visually looks M- (Mint Minus).  IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays superbly throughout with NO snap or crackle, no ticks or repetitive clicks, no distortion or loss of clarity.  No groove wear or clipped frequencies.  A superbly clean and well defined listen brought to life by the classic RVG mastering.  Plays as it looks!

Supplied in its original ’27 Years Blue Note’ advertising inner – fully intact bar one split to one side.  This is a great copy of one of The Jazz Messengers’ finest moments.

No reserve.
