ART BLAKEY – Orgy In Rhythm Volume 2 ORIG Blue Note LP / BLP 1555 (US, Mono, 1957)

Here’s Volume 2 of Blakey’s ‘Orgy In Rhythm’ sessions in its original 1500 series monaural press from 1957. A percussive master class also featuring Art Taylor, Jo Jones, ‘Specs’ Wright, Sabu, ‘Potato’ Valdez, Jose Valiente, Ubaldo Nieto, Evilio Quintero (all on drums and/or various forms of percussion); Herbie Mann on flute, Ray Bryant on piano and Wendell Marshall on bass.
The single-format, front laminated, heavy card sleeve features the ’43 West 61st Street, New York 23’ address to the lower rear. It’s a really super example, let down only by the previous owners’ names and a ‘No. 1’ written to the rear panel between the track listing. There’s also a copyright stamp to the same area and a couple of smears here too. Tiny patch of wear to the front bottom right corner (very small) and that’s about it. These excepted it’s a near perfect example with a beautiful, tight, shiny non-creased front laminate, really superb edges and spine (no rubs, scrapes or nicks here), no splits, no tears or rips. Fantastic, sharp opening edges with no feathering. Sits flat with no bends, ripples or moisture damage. The writing excluded, it would grade a superb EX+ or even M- but I’ll say EX- (Excellent Minus) taking that into account. Generally really well preserved!
The deep groove labels have different credits either side: Side 1the ‘Blue Note Records INC 47 West 63rd . NYC’ address. Side 2 has the same (in a thinner font) but WITHOUT the INC. Nice set with no writing or residue but some age-related ‘foxing’ spots mainly to Side 2 (looks worse on the photo than in reality). That said, not much evidence of spindle trails and still attractive.
The medium weight vinyl has ‘RVG’ etched to both sides and a ‘P’ (ear) inscription also. It grades an all round EX (Excellent) with Side 1 showing little, if any, evidence of use, while Side has a couple of small (and light!) marks. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays excellent too with NO snap, clicks or pops. NO distortion, groove wear or loss of clarity. Expect to hear just some occasional light dust ticks and a hint of soft crackle – only really decipherable in the quietest moments. A clear, well-defined listen without major audio problems.
