THIS ITEM COMES FROM OUR RECENT ACQUISITION OF ABOUT 35 STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE TITLES WHICH APPEAR TO BE OF THE 1966/67 VINTAGE (LIBERTY ERA), IN WHICH (BASED ON THE SAMPLE OF ABOUT 10 ITEMS WE OPENED) ABOUT 80% WERE LIBERTY PRESSINGS (SOME FIRST PRESSINGS, SOME SECOND) AND ABOUT 20% WERE NEW YORK, USA PRESSINGS (FIRST PRESSINGS). THESE TITLES ALMOST INVARIABLY HAVE LIBERTY INNER SLEEVES INSIDE, BUT SOME OF THEM DO ACTUALLY COME WITH THE ORIGINAL NEW YORK, USA LABELS INSIDE, APPARENTLY BEING THE LAST BATCH OF THE BLUE NOTE'S NEW YORK, USA PRESSINGS JUST BEFORE LIBERTY STARTED USING THEIR OWN VERSION OF THE BLUE NOTE LABEL. WE CAUTION THAT THERE IS A STRONG STATISTICAL POSSIBILITY THAT THIS MAY NOT BE THE FIRST (NEW YORK, USA) PRESSING, BUT, IN ANY EVENT, IT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE LATER THAN THE SECOND (DIVISION OF LIBERTY) PRESSING CIRCA 1967. FROM WHAT WE COULD DETERMINE, ALL OF THESE STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE TITLES HAVE BEEN MASTERED BY RUDY VAN GELDER AND WILL HAVE HIS STAMP IN THE TRAIL-OFF VINYL, BUT NONE OF THE RECORDS WILL HAVE EITHER DEEP GROOVES OR PLASTYLITE ("EAR") STAMPS .

Free for All is a high point in drummer Art Blakey's enormous catalog. This edition of the Jazz Messengers had been together since 1961 with a lineup that would be hard to beat: Freddie Hubbard on trumpet (his last session with the Messengers), Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass. Shorter's title track is one of the finest moments in the Jazz Messengers' history. In the eight minutes of "Free for All," an emotional apex is reached that skirts the edge of free bop without losing Blakey's rhythmic glue. Another Shorter composition, "Hammer Head," is a mid-tempo soul-blues groove, with Shorter, Hubbard, and Fuller taking exceptional solos while Blakey keeps the mid-tempo vigorously swinging. Hubbard's "The Core," dedicated to the Congress of Racial Equality, comes close to capturing the heat of the title cut, as it contains similar fiery interplay. The session's closer, Clare Fischer's "Pensativa" (brought to the Messengers songbook by Hubbard), would remain a favorite with Blakey for years. A passionate Jazz Messengers workout that proves essential.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A LARGE PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP - ABOUT 20% - IS MISSING)

(NOTE: THE SHRINK WRAP HAS SEPARATED ALONG ABOUT 70% OF THE OPENING SIDE, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY INTACT AND SEALED; TO MAKE SURE  THAT THE ALBUM DOES NOT ACCIDENTALY UNSEAL IN TRANSIT, WE HAVE PLACED TWO SMALL PATCHES OF CLEAR SCOTCH TAPE ON THE SHRINK WRAP TO HOLD IT IN PLACE; THE WINNING BIDDER CAN EASILY REMOVE THESE PIECES OF TAPE_

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1   (front side) and 2 (back side).

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
