Description
This is an incomplete set but with some rare extras. Art Hodes’ Hot Five (featuring the legendary Sidney Bechet) and their 1947 Blue Note 78 album, Hot Jazz at Blue Note, on Blue Note album 103. A very early release by the legendary jazz label. This set has two of the original three discs, and is missing the third one, but it includes two other Art Hodes Blue Note 78s. All in various conditions:
-Blue Note 531 - Save it Pretty Mama / Darktown Strutters’ Ball - this is the first of the original discs in the set. It plays well but it has two hairline cracks. A bit of wear as well, but it is still playable with a bit of light ticking mainly only on side one, and some very light background noise, still thoroughly enjoyable.
-Blue Note 532 - Shine / Memphis Blues - this is the second of the original set. Not cracked, and with fairly minor wear. Some scuffing and signs of being played quite a bit but it is still mostly quite shiny and plays clearly and beautifully.
-Blue Note 505 - Maple Leaf Rag / Yellow Dog Blues - not part of the original set but a rather rare earlier disc, under the name Art Hodes and his Chicagoans. Weirdly enough, Ray Conniff is on trombone! This copy is quite lovely, with only light scuffing and minimal wear. Really a beautiful, shiny and clean playing copy. A rare one.
-Blue Note 508 - There’ll Be Some Changes Made / Clark and Randolph - from the same session as above, and with the same personnel. This one is even cleaner, really about E, except for another hairline crack, which goes in an arc into the grooves about 1”. It is very tight and mostly just under the surface. I really don’t hear the slightest tiny tick at all. It plays perfectly. Really a great player, despite the light crack.
The cover is in exceptionally nice shape. The spine is clear and untorn, and the edges and corners are mostly quite clean and crisp. A little surface scuffing and signs of use but really a top cover. It also includes the original taped-in liner notes, though they have come loose. Still in great shape, and rare to find at all!
So even though it isn’t a full set, and all the discs aren’t perfect, this is a great rarity, and includes one of the rarer early Blue Note discs, number 505. A lovely set.
