One of only two albums Arthur Alexander released in his lifetime (we tend to dismiss the third, the one he recorded just before his death, in 1991, as a latter-day afterthought) this is a gorgeous display of his mighty vocal prowess; The album was recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio (Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, Dusty Springfield, etc) with a highly sympathetic and supportive ENTIRE Muscle Shoals house band, including the legendary Tommy Cogbill, who doubles as a producer. The album includes new versions of the two classic early 60's Arthur Alexander hits: Go on home girl (later recorded by the Stones and Ry Cooder) and our favorite Arthur Alexander ballad: In the middle of it all;  plus the gorgeous Dan Penn-penned ballad "Rainbow road" which remains Arthur's signature tune. While Arthur Alexander made a name for himself as a songwriter and vocalist in the early '60s, he was best known for the hits other folks had enjoyed with his songs (among them the Beatles and the Rolling Stones), while his performing career hit an unfortunate slump by the end of the decade. Alexander been out of the public eye for a few years when he scored a deal with Warner Brothers and cut a self-titled album in 1972. Alexander had great faith in the project, which was produced by Tommy Cogbill and featured the cream of the Muscle Shoals studio players, along with songwriting contributions from Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts, and Alexander himself. Sadly, the album flopped in the marketplace, but a listen to the results confirms this was the fault of the promotion men, not the artists; hitting a mid-point between deep Southern soul and country-leaning funk, Arthur Alexander showed he had only grown stronger and more impressive as a singer over the decade, and his songs, built from simple stories of love and loss, never failed to hit the home truth (it's a wonder that no one was able to pitch tracks like "In the Middle of It All" or "Love's Where Life Begins" to some of the more imaginative country acts in Nashville -- imagine George Jones wrapping his voice around either). Cogbill's production was rich but uncluttered with a deeply Southern feel, and the album won a richly deserved cult following among soul enthusiasts. This is beautiful, heart-wrenching music that no one with a heart and a soul can walk away from without feeling its impact.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a  cutout corner visible

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on front side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
