Assassin Of Silence?– Beneath All The Madness LP (Neurological Records SFC 5002 22 2/798)
1979 original LP on the private press label Neurological Records out of Reseda, CA. Great record with shades of early punk, avant rock, Hawkwind like sounds, early synth wave, robotic synth freakouts and some dark folk songs too. Bedroom-produced DIY sound.This is the bands much rarer debut album, their Phaze Shifter is well regarded as an home recorded private synth wave album.
The band acknowledged influence of Hawkwind and have been compared to The Units and Happy Dragon Band.

WFMU radio personality Tony Coulter announced the artists who will be on his premium yearly fund raising cd. Jim Curnutte's project "Assassin Of Silence”’s “Beneath All The Madness " was chosen for the song "Someday". The cd compilation titled "Wobbly Wave" is only available through Tony Coulter c/o WFMU FM Radio.
Jim was born somewhere between a taxi cab and the emergency room on a hot summer day. He started playing guitar at the age of seven. Influenced by Duane Eddy and Elvis, a plastic Mickey Mouse guitar was his instrument of choice at that time. After years of needing the guitar which would someday make him famous, he was at last given a Harmony six string acoustic which eventually went up in flames during his teen angst years.
At the age of eleven he formed his very first band called The Wonderers. Both the name and the band became famous following a teen dance, when the audience realized that the band was really The Wonderers not the Wounderers. Alas, spelling was not the main talent of the band. Performing a few original surf songs and a number of cover tunes the band was still ahead of it’s time and quite the anomaly for the small community where Jim lived. The Wonderers consisted of three guitar players and a drummer. It seemed that bass guitarists were either too old, or not interested in playing their tunes. One of The Wonderers guitar players later achieved considerable fame by penning two songs for Kenny Rogers’ album the Gambler. Who would have thought that someone from this obscure but talented band would ever make the big time?
After a brutal blow up over the direction of new material, Jim left the band for more fertile terrain with a new outfit, The Mind Garden, their name chosen after the release of the Byrds’ Younger Than Yesterday album. Many monikers were bandied about before settling on this choice, such as The Dr.Abiff Band and The Ducks Are On The Pond, to name but a couple. Around the summer of 1966, the band decided to work on mostly original songs written by Jim and bass player Mike Goodall. A four piece outfit equipped with better guitars and amps, they started playing the better venues in town. A highly memorable and indeed literally incendiary pep rally gig for their local high school resulted in the band being unable to ever perform again at any school in the county they lived in. Setting fire to most of their equipment and sending a Harmony guitar in flames into the audience may have made for high drama and exciting visuals, but it also served to do them in, at least in terms of further public performances. Finding themselves without any schools to appear at, the band took to the stage on Friday nights at the state mental institution. The band was finally finding their fan base. Each gig grew wilder and more insane with every performance, quite possibly resulting in a similar effect on the audiences. With a new name and a strong fan base The Mind Garden once again attempted getting gigs at the local schools. One such gig was booked without the knowledge that this band used to be known as The Ducks Are On The Pond. When the auditorium erupted in a mass of noise and destruction during an hour long version of Jim’s song Troubles Falling By, the audience had left and the principal attempted to have them arrested. To get back at the school, the band decided to have a total blow out at Mike Goodall’s house the same night as the football team's homecoming game. During half-time, a Mind Garden fan took over the public address system and announced that the Mind Garden was performing and that there would be free booze and drugs at 914 West 3rd Street and, oh yes, naked women. The stands cleared and the party began. And yes, there were naked women. In fact, several of them posed in the tubs that were filled with pure grain and grape juice, a heady concoction known as Purple Jesus. After several hours, dozens of arrests were made and over 500 hundred crazed and drunken high school kids were chased from the neighborhood. The band managed to elude authorities and was never caught, their escape facilitated by a roadie with a police scanner who informed them that the cops were on their way. Several months later, Jim left the band due to differences in its’ musical direction.
