Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few light, quite fine and generally faint spindle marks. This copy is the original ‘flute’ mix, never easy to find with top sound. This copy plays beautifully throughout.

Cat Number: CAS 1010

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 167 grams. A real heavyweight, the second pressings made by EMI for B&C were considerably thinner and lighter.

Rarity: Scarce, especially first pressings that play well. This album needs explaining because it is somewhat complex. Initial pressings had a rough textured B&C label (as per this copy) and a few then pressed smooth by EMI. But the main issue is the sound. First pressings – known as the ‘Flute Mix’ – have a very different sound to this remixed version, these only available with the smooth labels and the records have totally different matrix numbers and sound. When Nick Graham, the original vocalist and bassist, left the band to join Skin Alley, guitarist and vocalist John Du Cann was recruited. The new Atomic Rooster decided to remix three songs adding guitar – ‘Friday the 13th’ (overdubbed with Du Cann vocals and guitar), ‘Before Tomorrow’ and ‘S.L.Y.’ (overdubbed with Du Cann guitar). This apparently done for the American release, but it failed to happen, but clearly the band wanted the new sound of these songs. I consider both versions are essential for fans as they really do sound quite different, being honest, I have found the second guitar-mix actually harder to find than the original flute mix. The ultimate first pressings with the textured labels are the most prized by collectors, these never easy to find with records in lightly played condition and without pressings issues. Well this copy plays with very little unwanted at all and was a pleasure to play-grade. The cover is nice but has a couple of issues as described further down.

Musicians: Vincent Crane - Hammond organ, backing vocals, piano; Nick Graham - bass guitar, lead vocals, flute, guitar; Carl Palmer - drums, percussion, congas, glockenspiel.

Brief Info: The debut album by Atomic Rooster, the only one to include Carl Palmer who left to help form ELP, and Nick Graham. Regarded by many as a prog classic, I consider the most difficult to find in their catalogue, especially in anything like top condition. I have seen the album several times over the course-of-time, but most-all in very poor conditions. This has a couple of cover issues: a small sticker tear on the front, this on a white area, so showing far less. The back has a name and date – this apart – a very fine example for a cover that rarely wears well. The heavy-pressed is lovely and plays great without pressing noises or issues which is never guaranteed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): but this actually looks considerably better in real terms. With a sticker tear on the front and a name on the back, grading is difficult and very subjective. A single unlaminated format with the inside flipbacks rounded near the entrance which is a factor for era on this cover. The surfaces are smooth and matt. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Includes the plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front: I have always found this a difficult cover to find nice, with first issue records inside especially so, those being considerably thicker and heavier that often means ringwear which this has largely avoided. Firstly the negative: a moderate round sticker tear towards the top right corner. But this is entirely on a white, non-graphic area, so it has far less visual impact and shows far less less than it could have done. Still present nonetheless. A little light creasing near the bottom right corner but little else. Faint discolouration around the rim shape on the right, but far less than most seen. All the graphic areas look superb, and overall still clean and fresh looking. Not perfect, but still impressive.

Cover Back: A little creasing on the same corner as the front and a gentle vertical one near the spine that shows little. The main issue is the dated name near the bottom right corner, this another from a collection where the owner signed all he owned. In terms of wear, this back ranks as one of the finest I have seen, barely even a trace of ringwear or rubbing, it remains very attractive indeed, but not for purists with the couple of aforemened issues.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still very straight showing little wear to the white surface.

Bottom Edge: Largely as above, any hint of rubbing gentle and faint, this edge does have a little colour in the graphic, but most present. For a storage edge like this, it has fared well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still mainly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on – and this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with light compression, again quite thin. The ends have rubbed a little, but only gentle traces on the green surface. A little text affected, but the majority is still present.

Corners: Light corner rubbing with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: In terms of real wear – very little – but a couple of issues that are hardly serious. So not for the very discerning, but many collectors will be more than happy – this is still a very attractive example of a challenging cover.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain solid white unlined inner that has only very gently aged. Minimal creasing and all seams unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally fresh and heavily pressed or robust thick vinyl. A copy appearing very modestly played on all the evidence with any surface marks or blemishes minimal and faint, even when viewed more critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches and this record plays as fine as it looks without invisible pressing flaws or nasties. A lovely first issue to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this heavyweight pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
