ATOMIC ROOSTERVINCENT CRANE, JOHN CANN, PAUL HAMMOND,
The central figure throughout the many line-ups of Atomic Rooster was Vince Crane,
who'd previously played for The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. Drummer, Carl Palmer,
(ex-Chris Farlowe's Thunderbirds) had previously played with Crane on The Crazy World's US tour.
They seem to have taken their name from an album by the American group Rhinoceros and,
having quickly established themselves on the club and college circuit, issued a debut album
Atomic Rooster in 1970, which was well received and sold enough copies to make the Top 50.
Their promising start was rapidly arrested in 1970 when Nick Graham departed for Skin Alley,
being replaced by John Cann (ex-Andromeda). In June, Carl Palmer also left,
to became one third of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. He was replaced briefly by Rick Parnell (ex-Horse).
In the Autumn of 1970 Vince Crane put brought in former Farm drummer Paul Hammond to replace Parnell.
This line-up played a much heavier brand of rock which proved popular with the punters.
The Death Walks Behind You album made the UK Top 20 and they
also enjoyed two Top 20 UK hit singles with Tomorrow Night...(Tapestry of Delights)

"Devil's Answer" might be the record for which Atomic Rooster are remembered, but it was
their second album that posted warning that they were on the verge of creating something dazzling,
simply because the record itself is a thing of almost freakish beauty.
With only organist Vincent Crane surviving from the original lineup, and John Du Cann coming in
to relieve him of some of the songwriting duties, Death Walks Behind You opens at a gallop
and closes with a sprint.The title track is effectively spooky enough for any Hammer horror aficionado,
all descending pianos and Psycho-screaming guitars, while "Gershatzer," a duet for organ and percussion,
proves that new drummer Paul Hammond is more than a match for the departed Carl Palmer.
It's in between these dramatic bookends, however, that Rooster truly peak,
with the stately "VUG," the pensive "Nobody Else," and the truly amazing "Tomorrow Night"
(one of the scariest love songs ever let loose on the U.K. chart) all impressing ...(AllMusic)
