Description
Atomic Rooster : In Hearing Of A1 / B1 1st Press
This first pressing on the Pegasus label plays to a wonderful standard with great clarity on both sides. There is only very minimal 'background' on S1 and S2 in particular is stunning! There are no clicks or pops on either side and in my opinion has been played a handful of times at most judging by the audio quality and the lack of spindle wear.
The cover is in superb condition with only very minimal shelf wear and one thing you immediately notice is how strong and clean it still is. It has obviously not been handled very much at all.
PEG 1 // A - 1U / B - 1U
The audio on S1 is Near Mint (Mint- for the majority / Track 2 intro Ex / T3 Ex+)
The audio on S2 is Mint- (Track 1 ranges between Ex+ & Mint-)
The gatefold is Ex++
The labels are Mint-
The original inner is Near Mint
Visual grading
This vinyl is visually stunning and retains a lovely glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. All I can detect under a strong light are a small number of faint hairlines. It really is a very impressive looking vinyl and with barely any spindle wear it has clearly hardly ever been on a turntable. The run out the run out grooves are also super clean.
Play gradingThe instrumental opening on 'Breakthrough' plays beautifully with no intrusion and it's the depth of the audio that you really notice, the playback is so strong. This quality is still there as the vocal begins and it continues in the same precise way. From start to finish there is just no interference and it is clear this record has hardly been played. The clarity is stunning and even the long fade out has no 'background'. This is a Mint start to the album for sure.
The intro on 'Break The Ice' has a very faint 'hiss' in the background and a just a hint of very light static but both are minor and non-intrusive. It still grades as Ex and once the track gets going the audio is faultless. The remainder is more or less perfect and I only heard one very light tick, not a click I hasten to add! Again the clarity is so impressive and so the bulk of the track is easily Mint- although the minus is not exactly required!
'Decision / Indecision' again has a little 'hiss' on the intro and minor static - not loud at all and is even quieter during the first vocal. Once the volume increases the audio is superb and the quieter sections have only very minimal 'background'. The vast majority plays with great definition but I think Ex+ is probably deserved overall.
The percussive intro on 'A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down' plays with wonderful precision and this instrumental continues to play with incredible power and depth. There is nothing that intrudes on the quality of the listen and there are no ticks, clicks, pops or crackle and the playback is as close to audio perfection as is possible. I heard just a couple of seconds of barely audible static throughout the entire playback and just a little right at the end. This has to grade as Near Mint at the very least.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Black Snake' has only very minimal static on the intro and once the vocal begins the playback is stunning. The clarity of sound here is so impressive, each note is so 'clean' and there is barely any intrusion as the track progresses. There is no underlying static and the only interference is a couple of static clicks. Overall though a fine example of this relatively quiet number that ranges between Ex+ and Mint- but certainly a lot more of the latter!
The long intro on 'Head In The Sky' is practically 'as new' with only one mega light tick right at the start and it continues to play with amazing clarity and depth. There is no interference and this easily qualifies as Mint- the audio has strong and clean throughout.
'The Rock' more than maintains this standard and from start to finish the audio is as close to perfect as could be. With only a couple of barely audible ticks this is Mint- for sure.
'The Price' has barely any static on the intro and then plays with stunning quality for the remainder. There is just no interference and the clarity is of a level that you so rarely find. There is no inner groove distortion and that is very much the case on the 'high octane' vocal finish. The fade out also has no 'background' which gives a good idea of the clarity on offer here. A Mint- end to the album.
In summary this first pressing plays to a superb standard with only very minimal 'background' which is mainly limited to S1. Even then it is only minor and the clarity on both sides is so impressive. There are no loud clicks or pops and only a very small number of light ticks and a little 'background' on a couple of intros only.
The Gatefold
The E.J. Day gatefold is in great condition with only very minimal shelf wear. It was manufactured with thick card and you can tell it has hardly been handled as it remains very strong and robust. The top edges are in superb shape with barely any wear and the bottom edges just have a little rubbing which is not really visible anyway due to the light colour of background. The wide spine is near perfect with only a minor (very minor!) wear on the bottom corner and the opening edge has no handling wear at all. The other corners are superb clean with only mild rubbing on the bottom right of the back cover as you open the gatefold. The front cover is in beautiful condition with no marking and the back cover is almost as good with only minimal 'spotting' near the top edge and some white 'specks' near the bottom. The inside of the gatefold is very clean with only minor 'spotting' along the top edges where the cover may have been lightly held together but as I say it is only minor and not immediately noticeable. The colours remain strong and vibrant throughout and this is a fine example overall.
The Inner Sleeve
The die-cut plain white inner sleeve (with Patent No and Made In England printed on one side) is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears, no marking and only very minimal creasing.
The Labels
The Pegasus labels are near perfect with barely any spindle wear and no marking or writing. Stunning!
