Label Condition: Both in beautiful condition, truly gorgeous labels that are very clean, fresh and attractive. Both sides have barely a spindle trace at all. The cover itself has a little wear/issues, but the record itself is lovely and plays as such.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Formed in 1969 as the rise in British progressive rock was getting into top gear, the original three members were: Vincent Crane (formerly Crazy World of Arthur Brown – keyboards), Nick Graham (bass) and Carl Palmer (formerly Crazy World of Arthur Brown – drums). This is the band’s third album, it blends progressive rock with heavy metal elements, again a very fine album – all the first three are worth checking out, they should appeal to fans of Black Sabbath, Kingdom Come and Black Widow et al. It sold quite well on the success of the hit single ‘The Devil’s Answer’ that was not included on the UK version of the album. The cover has aged a little, but still a nice one. The record is superb and appears hardly even played and offers very clean and impressive sound, this always the most significant factor for me.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): mainly due to what appears to be a very neat top edge split repair. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Artwork drawn by Roger Dean. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Like so many of this time, another one prone to all forms of wear, this front has little. The odd minor mark and very gentle hints and traces of toning. Barely any creasing or rubbing and this quite unforgiving front still looks very attractive.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, gentle toning traces and mild hints of age, but again this is very nice and never easy to find as such. The lack of ringwear is a major plus, the fine repair on a central back top edge split just apparent (if really looked for).

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb Roger Dean artwork and still looking impressive, again similar to the other main faces with gentle traces of toning.

Top Edges: Light patchy rubbing with a neat repair to a central back edge split. This as neat as they get and detracting little overall.

Bottom Edges: Only very light patchy rubbing, being a pale surface, this registers less. All edges are straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with little wear, thickening or burring, this cover actually made with slightly thicker card than some. These are both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and generally clean with barely any compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up flush and parallel. All text is present and immaculate, this never easy to find as such on this cover. Even the vulnerable folds retain full ink cover with no scuffs.

Corners: Mainly gentle and light tip rubs with very fine or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A highly respectable example of another difficult matt gatefold cover that is seldom seen without wear or issues. Only gently aged with most areas still looking attractive and neat. Not for the perfectionists, but many collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: the plain white unlined solid inner sleeve again has aged with some toning spots and darkening, but it remains fully intact and hardly creased. All the edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that I feel sure has been played very little. Very clean with excellent shine and heavily pressed. Any surface marks are few, very fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. A tiny mark on ‘Decision/Indecision’ emits half-a-dozen light clicks but little else and this is a lovely early-pressed example that was a pleasure to play-grade. The cover may have aged a little, but the record has not and most collectors will enjoy this prog classic, the odd tiny blemish on such vintage pieces near impossible to avoid totally, this will take some beating.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely clean record offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound minimal and faint, this too played on a very revealing Linn LP12 Sondek. As stated above, a tiny few light clicks on side one, but little else. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressively clean pressed Pegasus record which merits strong recommendation.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
