Brief Info: The third Audience album (if indeed you count the debut that was withdrawn). A quality four piece band that played progressive, blues-based rock with jazzy elements. Comparisons – Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig, somewhere between two with a vocalist sounding a little like Axl Rose. This a very early pressed UK original and offering mostly very fine sound, never guaranteed on this label. The odd trace of gentle surface and a few brief, quite light clicks near the end of ‘I Putaa Spell on You’, so not for purists who only want ‘perfection’ at any cost. Superbly recorded and produced with a full-on sound, this for most sounds terrific with great music as well, many fans of this possibly under-appreciated band will enjoy this one.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Yes, another unprotected gatefold that is very prone to wear, seldom seen anything like top grade. This has a very nice front with little wear to its main surface area. A little rubbing present on the top and bottom edges and corner tips that few avoid. One crease near the bottom right corner area has very modest visibility. Still clean and with nice freshness.

Cover Back: The back is similar with rim arc rubbing (mild ringwear) near the top and bottom as seen. In terms of this one, it can almost considered modest, I have seen some with full-blown penetrating ringwear which this is considerable distance from.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A few light handling marks on the right darker surface, gentle traces of set-off on the slightly lighter left, the result from resting upon when closed, this near impossible to avoid. A few mild creases and a mild hint of waving on the left. This purely on this inside edge, the outside faces are totally flat.

Top Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing. Both straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Moderate and moderate(+) rubbing in places and less patchy.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, actually quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. No text printed on this one, the graphic flows around and hardly any lost to wear. The odd tiny chip or minor rub trace only.

Corners: Moderate corner rubbing with mostly fine shape retained, no bashes or noteworthy dinks.

Cover Summary: With moderate edge wear and light rim arcing on the back, this does remind of age a little, but hardly major, this has more positives than negatives for quite an unforgiving cover. Not for purists, but many collectors will be happy.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlined lyric inner sleeve, printed one side only. This has aged a little either with some light, gentle tone spotting with a slightly larger one on the plain back as seen. The wide top opening neat and undamaged and hardly any creasing. This has two external flipbacks construction and all edges unsplit with no repairs. One that seldom avoids splits and often missing altogether.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with fine surface marks seen under light, a very fine gently penetrating mark at the end of ‘I Put a Spell on You’ has a few brief, quite light clicks nears its very end – this mentioned already above. Still a fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence. Visually a nice record, not for the most discerning like the cover, but a hugely respectable 45-year-old original that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays for most even above it’s fine visual grading with not too much to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and no tracking issues*. Any surface sound light and infrequent, traces here-and-there, also the aforementioned brief clicks as now mentioned for the third time. These on a quiet outro near the song’s end. In terms of fidelity and dynamic range, this record excels, superbly produced and recorded with full-on sound – and for most, this copy still delivers. Okay, not pristine, but still a very enjoyable experience, very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality rock album. Knowing this label well enough, it could prove quite difficult to find better, or certainly ‘perfect’. This one should please many collectors and still merits high recommendation (unless ‘silence’ is mandatory), and good luck finding that.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
