Brian D'Souza has made many great records as Auntie Flo, most frequently exploring the intersection between his global musical influences and the club culture in which he was raised (Optimo being a particular influence, as you'd expect from someone who grew up in Glasgow). Even so, there's something particularly alluring about Birds of Paradise, his sixth solo album. While last year's In My Dreams (I'm a Bird and I'm Free) was warm, organic and laced with indigenous instrumentation and vocals, Birds of Paradise is a far more electronic and club-rooted affair. Born initially of analogue hardware-based improvisation, much of the material sits somewhere between mid-80s 'proto-house', richly colourful nu-disco, and Balearic house - all laden with synth-marimba and synth-kalimba melodies (as well as the odd nod to Moby's 'Go' and 808 State's 'Pacific').
