AUTOGRAPHED EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS, BY SUPERTRAMP THIS IS THE REAL DEAL, AN ALBUM SIGNED BY THE ENTIRE BAND!
THIS IS THE STORY OF HOW THIS TREASURE CAME TO BE:
In the summer of 1977, I spent my 17th summer in California with my sister, as I had done the previous two summers. My brother-in-law raised racing thoroughbreds, and when I arrived this particular summer, they were staying in a beach condo near the track where they had a colt running. Just before my arrival, they had moved into the condo, which had been being occupied by two couples: John and Christine Helliwell and Dougie and Christine Thompson, John and Dougie being members of the band Supertramp. It was the wives, in fact, who showed the condo to my sister. They were actually just moving into another unit down the street. They ended up hitting it off and becoming good friends! So when I got there, I ended up meeting all of the band, and they were quite taken with my "east Tennessee accent"! They gave me this album, fully autographed, as a present. It was already somewhat used, and the hole that is in the cover was already present. I don't recall how it got there (if they even told me). It may have been one that was not sellable, because of the damage, or it might have been one that they had been listening to or playing for friends. But that is part of its value! As the years passed, John and Christine remained BFFs with my sister, and I had the honor of being included in this friendship. They lived in California for many years, though they now have been back in England for a long time. I have had the privilege of being a guest in John and Christine's California home on several occasions, for several days at a time. I have had free tickets to concerts, and partied with them at after parties. The best was the 3 am champagne breakfast buffet after the Breakfast in America concert in Nashville when I was in college at Middle Tennessee State University! I have included a picture of three pics of me with John... one is also with his wife, and one is when we went hiking with a few of the band's support members... sound guy, manager, I don't remember exactly who all, but after the hike we all went to a movie!! The third is of me and John in his Ferrari! He took me for a spin down through Topanga Canyon, what a trip!
The signatures were from pre-Sharpie days, and they are not as dark as I'd like, but they are still quite visible! If you need anything else to authenticate them (I don't know what it would be), please ask.
In case you are wondering... I am offering it for sale because I think of them more as friends than of me as a "fan"... I have plenty of pictures and good memories with them, and I don't really display things like this... so it would be better off in some fan's memorabilia collection than in my closet!!
