original pressing in awesome gatefold fold-out cover
and is Autographed by Michael Jackson on the front cover
(although we have no way of authenticating the signature) & judging
from our own research as to what Michael's signature looks like, it's hard
to say because he appears to have changed the way he signed his name
many times over the years - so this is being sold with no guarantees but
it is exactly as we found it several years ago & since it is a personalized
signature, it seems unlikely to be fake? tell us what you think
or maybe just bid based on what you know?

~ condition ~


the record is visually in very good - condition but has been
fully play tested and it actually sounds fantastic with only a hint
of light crackle in a few spots ~ the vinyl is shiny and clean
but with several scuffs and scratches but really does play and
sound great with no skips, repeats or bad noise at all

the cover is also in so-so shape and while it has bold
bright printing and intact seams, there is clear tape around
the edges as if it were at some point taped up on a wall or something
there is also the remnant of a note underneath the tape along the front
seam edge & there are also a few spots where the printing has been
peeled away (from tape removal?) and besides the signature
and inscription (in black ball point pen) there is no
additional writing or markings on the cover

Off the Wall was a massive success, spawning four Top Ten hits
(two of them number ones), but nothing could've prepared Michael Jackson
for Thriller ~ nobody could have prepared anybody for the success of Thriller
since the magnitude of its success was simply unimaginable ~ an album that
sold 40 million copies in its initial chart run, with seven of its 9 tracks reaching
the Top Ten. This record had something for everybody, building on the basic
blueprint of Off the Wall by adding harder funk, hard rock, softer ballads and
smoother soul & expanded had something for every kind of audience & that alone
would have given the album a good shot at a huge audience, but it also arrived
precisely when MTV was reaching its ascendancy, and Jackson helped the network
by being not just its first superstar, but first black star. This lp stayed on the charts
and turned out singles for nearly two years because it was an incredibly good album
and while it's calculated, the chutzpah of those calculations (before this, nobody
would even have thought to bring in metal virtuoso Eddie Van Halen to play on a
disco cut) is outdone by their success. This is where a song as gentle & lovely as
"Human Nature" coexists comfortably with the tough "Beat It" & the sweet schmaltz
of the Paul McCartney duet "The Girl Is Mine" and the frizzy funk of "P.Y.T."
