Amazing record here from first note to last, and among my absolute favorite Herrmann anythings---and how could it not be, when you fully understand what is being done here.
Herrmann takes on four modern composers, delivering their music symphonically, to be sure, but as if played in a concert-hall jazz idiom.
The results are astounding, particularly with the London Festival Recording Ensemble right there in the room, which is how they appear, rock solid in the imaging.
Herrmann's great wizardry delivers Gershwin's "Variations for Piano & Orchestra" on I GOT RHYTHM, Stravinsky's RAGTIME, Darius Milhaud's CREATION OF THE WORLD (outstanding!), and Kurt Weill songs from THE THREE PENNY OPERA, among them POLLY'S SONG and MACK THE KNIFE.
