Description
The Sunbury Rock Festival was touted as the "Rock Happening of 1972", and ran from January 29th to January 31.
It was held on a private farm in Sunbury, about 35 kilometres West of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. This is a New Zealand-made Double LP by Havoc and Southern Records. "AZTECS Live at Sunbury!
The Gate fold double LP is wrapped in a cardboard die cut cover, printed with a half-tone light green photograph of the crowd and stage, at the Sunbury Music Festival. Category number HST 4003/04
The inner part of this limited edition sleeve has a full-colour, gloss, 3 dimensional die-cut pop up. I must point out that the actual die-cut, pop-up is pristine, the die cut tabs are still in place and the pop-up has never been used, it is crisp, bright and pristine.
The outside of the green die cut cardboard cover has some white mottling on the back left rear, and one of the wings of the sleeve has a slight black mark on it (see photographs).
The front, bottom, left and bottom right, of the outer cardboard album cover, has some very tiny corner-wear, hardly visible, but must be mentioned.
The actual inner album record sleeve has a bit of a fold on the bottom right hand corner, but the rest of the album, both in and out is crisp, bright and colorful with no ring wear or damage whatsoever.
I can tell you that this Album cover, the album sleeve and its contents have been stored safely in a cupboard all these years and has never been played or handled.

People will tell you that this record is very rare to find in near mint condition. The records in this almost pristine album, look as though they have never ever been played, they are shiny and pristine. The labels are crisp, bright and clean, with no damage or spindle marks.
The Outer cover which contains the four color process,s high gloss, 3D pop-out is in very good condition. It only missed out on near mint because it has some white mottling on the rear of the half tone, green photo cover has white mottling and a faint black mark. (see photos)
But on side one, record one, across track two, into three, there is a light mark, possibly a scratch. about 5 mm long, just on the surface. It is not known if it affects play as the records have been left unplayed so as to preserve condition. Playing them will reduce the grading from Near Mint to Very Good +
You will not find this album in better condition, we already know it's sought after, and rare. Collectors have three main rules, condition, condition, condition. This is a rare opportunity to own a highly collectible, rare and valuable asset, that is a hedge against inflation and great fun too!
In 1972 when Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs played the Sunbury Music Festival I was just a ten year old boy living in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne.
Mum had friends passing through, on their way to the Sunbury Pop Festival. It was only less than a half hours drive from where I lived.
The excitement was palpable, probably enhanced by the smell of a spliff being passed around in our lounge room, as the friendly hippies dropped acid and drank and danced.
History was about to happen and legends would be born when the Festival was over. and that night I watched it on the news with excitement. Flower Children" swam naked in the dirty farm dams.
Sunbury Music Festival was a huge hit, images of Billy Thorpe and other famous acts, like Ross Wilson and Daddy Cool playing at the Festival were broadcast around the world at the time, showing on the evening news in most Western Countries.
The crowd dance half naked, and some totally naked in the bush paddocks of a farm, in Sunbury, 30 kilometres West of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, where they had set up a stage and fenced off a large area.
People were allowed to camp at the site. The music was Rock and Roll and it was world class.It was Australia's answer to the USA's Monterey Pop Festival.
The Beatles had come, conquered and folded. Led Zeppelin were taking hard rock and blues fans by storm the world over.... The Doors were just emerging with their Avant-Garde Rocking style. . . . . And Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs had Australia in the palm of their hands, with the release of the Hard Rock Anthem- "Most People I Know".
