Abba – Angel Eyes / Voulez Vous, 1979 UK 7” Epic S EPC 7499.

Any serious Abba collector will know of the two other almost certainly unique examples of this record that were pressed – one on yellow vinyl and one on red vinyl, and which sold for I think about £300 - £400 or so a few years ago. I have seen pictures of the two records and one was pressed with a solid centre while the other was pressed with a large centre. The assumption that they were pressed up in those colours as tests for future releases is perfectly plausible.

Which brings us to this record – which has also been made with a large centre, and may well have been made on the same day as those other two? It has a regular UK label, but is not at all regular in its appearance. Around 80% of it is pressed on brown vinyl but in one area especially there is quite a lot of white and I can also see all sorts of colours such as reds, pinks, a little bit of green etc. Also, although I have just stated it to be brown vinyl, when viewed at certain angles and in certain lights it looks almost like a very deep pink colour. Little traces of all these colours swirl through the main brown colouring at random.

I think it likely that there could be one of two explanations. 1) Somebody who worked at the pressing plant was having a laugh! Or 2) and sort of related to the first one – someone was explaining to me that this could have been at the very end of the pressing run when they were ‘purging’ the machines by effectively flushing it through with any old plastic. No records should have been pressed but somehow this one appeared! As a matter of interest, I did find it at a car boot sale just a short distance away from Aylesbury in Bucks, where CBS / Epic was based and records were pressed. So, it could simply have been smuggled out by that person who had been having a laugh!

Which does not make it any less rare or unique. We are lucky that it has survived and also that I found it. It was not saved as a mega-rarity. Whoever wrote I.M. on the label simply considered it to be part of their singles collection as they had written I.M. on all of their records. The seller (who may well have been I.M.) did not know or care about it as all of the bog-standard late 1970s pop singles were being sold very cheaply. I only happened to spot this because it was out of its sleeve. But find it I did and am now giving Abba enthusiasts the chance to become the owner of what must surely be the only example of this record that was made in this colour / colour scheme?!

It is impossible to be an expert in all realms of collecting, and I am honestly representing this item to the best of my knowledge and ability. If the item has a fault then I have mentioned it.
