This beautiful LP from Deutsche Grammophon (419 598-1, German pressing, white circle label, DDD stereo, booklet missing) features Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's resplendent account of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor Op. 125 “Choral”, warmly recorded 'live' in the rich acoustics of the Musikvereinssaal in May 1986.
Joining Abbado and VPO on this memorable occasion were the Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor (Director: Walter Hagen-Groll) and soloists Gabriela Benackova (soprano), Marjana Lipovsek (alto), Gosta Winbergh (tenor), and Hermann Prey (baritone).
Though Abbado's more recent Berlin Philharmonic Beethoven Symphony cycle has rightly won widespread acclaim and garnered numerous awards, his earlier VPO traversal, more expansive and interpretatively daring, remains under-rated and only grows in stature with repeated hearing. Abbado's VPO Beethoven Op. 92 is one of the great Seventh's on disc, well within the ranks of Furtwangler (BPO), Toscanini (NYPO), and, for this listener, Munch (RCA, 1949). The Fourth, Sixth, and Eighth are also wonderfully brought off, and if ensemble playing isn't always as secure as it would be in Berlin, there is nonetheless a tremendous sense of occasion, as befitting 'live' performance – this is a great Beethoven cycle – period.
The extraordinary cover art reproduces a detail from Gustav Klimt’s “Choir of Heavenly Angels – Joy, bright spark of divinity – This kiss is for all the world” – frieze for the left side-room of the Vienna Secession, created for the exhibition of Max Klinger’s Beethoven sculpture.
A full-page insert is included with liner notes in German and Italian (by Prof. Dr. Volker Scherliess), as well as in French (Jean-Claude Poyet) and in English (by composer Robert Simpson, no less). Full vocal texts in all four languages are also provided and on the reverse side of the jacket are striking color photos from the Musikvereinssaal taken during the concerts from which this recording was made.

CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Aside from some very minor minor bumping at corners, really there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears almost as new – a superb collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
