ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fascinating and highly rare gatefold LP from Dynamic (DS 4001, Italian pressing, black/silver label, stereo) features Salvatore Accardo’s world premiere recording of Nicolò Paganini’s 60 Variations on the Genovese aria “Barucabà”, MS 71, recorded in Italy in 1969.
It should be noted that for this recording, Accardo played Paganini's own Guarnieri del Gesù 'Il Cannone' (1743). The “Barucabà” constitute an extraordinary compositional feat by Paganini and few violinists have taken up the many challenges they present. Accardo plays with his customary technical mastery and brings to bear his unrivaled insight into this composer’s world. For all those who treasure the art of the violin, there is much to admire here and this remarkable album remains a landmark in the Paganini discography.
It is the 1743 'Il Cannone' violin shown on the album front. On the interior panels of the gatefold jacket are printed insightful liner notes , in Italian only, by Edward Neill, as well as two striking black and white photos of Accardo from the actual recording sessions.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the laminated jacket is VERY GOOD. The only real flaw preventing a higher grading concerns a bit of discoloration/spotting to the interior panels. There is also very minor bumping at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
